As a lifelong fan of the Fast Saga, I can confidently say that the evolution of this franchise has been nothing short of exhilarating. From its humble beginnings as a street-racing tale to an action/espionage/sci-fi extravaganza that spans the globe, it’s been a thrilling ride. I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner infiltrating a gang of street racers one moment, and then witnessing Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw team up to save the world the next.
The transformation of the Fast & Furious series, often referred to as the Fast Saga, has been nothing short of intriguing. What started as a straightforward story about an FBI agent (Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner) infiltrating a street-racing gang in Los Angeles and forming bonds with them, has unexpectedly expanded into a thrilling blend of action, espionage, and science fiction, taking place across various global locations.
In a twist that’s become a signature of this series, you won’t find us grumbling; part of the excitement lies in anticipating how each new installment will surpass its predecessor. Notably, one beloved aspect of the Fast Saga is the transformation of adversaries into allies within the ever-growing Toretto family of heroes. Remarkable characters like DSS operative Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) and vengeful sibling Deckard Shaw (portrayed by Jason Statham), who garnered such popularity as regular F&F elements, eventually took the spotlight in 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a spinoff movie that they headlined. Directed by David Leitch, who co-created the John Wick intellectual property, this film is currently available on Peacock for streaming.

Justin Lin, director of Fast Saga, rules out a definitive “no” to any future installments of Fast & Furious, including a potential crossover with Jurassic World. – Surreal: Vin Diesel gears up for the return of Fast & Furious as he gets back on the race track.
When exactly does Hobbs & Shaw take place in the Fast Saga timeline?
In 2011, it was Hobbs who first appeared on the scene in ‘Fast Five’, joining Dom and his team as they ventured to Rio de Janeiro. He officially joined forces with our heroes in ‘Fast & Furious 6’ (2013), during their confrontation with Owen Shaw (played by Luke Evans). The defeat of Shaw set off Deckard’s rampage in ‘Furious 7′ (2015). Interestingly, Hobbs’ quest for vengeance was sparked by Han’s (Sung Kang) supposed death in Japan, making ‘Tokyo Drift’ a sort of hidden prequel. The complex relationship between Hobbs and Shaw, characterized by love and hate, started to unfold in ‘The Fate of the Furious’ (2017), following their uneasy alliance to break free from a maximum security prison.
The movie titled Hobbs & Shaw, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, presumably occurs between The Fate of the Furious and F9 (2021), although Collider argues that it could come after F9. Blending elements of buddy comedy and Mission: Impossible-style action, this film sees Hobbs and Shaw joining forces unwillingly to prevent a lethal virus from being acquired by Brixton, a ruthless and cyborg-enhanced villain who serves as the proxy for a technology-driven cult intent on refining humanity.
In an interview with SYFY Wire during the world premiere, project co-writer Chris Morgan explained that due to the numerous actors in the “Fast” films, there’s limited time dedicated to each individual character. This means viewers don’t get insight into their thoughts, motivations, backgrounds, or origins. The intention behind the spinoff is to delve deeper into a few characters, uncovering more about their personalities and histories.
