As a seasoned gamer of TV shows and the occasional real-life hostage situation (just kidding!), I can say that “High Potential” has been a breath of fresh air in my living room. The show’s unique blend of humor, drama, and action keeps me on the edge of my seat, and it’s unfortunate that the extended hiatus has left me with an empty void in my weekly viewing schedule.
An excess of something good may undeniably result in unfavorable outcomes, but it’s unclear if a slight lack of something good is significantly more beneficial. For instance, ABC’s High Potential has been a massive ratings success, making it the network’s biggest new show since the premiere of The Conners, with audiences in the double digits when factoring in delayed viewing. However, after just seven episodes, it has taken an extended holiday break, and I find myself yearning for its return!
Don’t worry if you don’t possess Morgan’s remarkable photographic memory, there’s a glimmer of Kaitlin Olson on the horizon, and we can confirm that ‘High Potential’ will return with fresh episodes – though it won’t grace our screens in 2024 television schedules. And I have a few optimistic ideas about where her narrative might head with someone specific next.
When Will High Potential Season 1 Return?
After a few brief pauses in Season 1, the show High Potential is currently experiencing an extended break, with its seventh episode airing on November 12 as a midseason finale. This episode was quite intense, featuring one of many hostage situations common in ABC dramas this season. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to catch it again until the 2025 winter schedule commences.
ABC unveiled its midseason lineup a day prior to the latest episode of “High Potential”, and shared that Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Judy Reyes along with the rest of the LAPD team will return on primetime television starting January 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET. The upcoming six episodes will now air following “Will Trent“‘s third season, as the current season of “Dancing with the Stars” is expected to wrap up by then.
Since it’s scheduled earlier, “High Potential” will act as a precursor itself in the second half of the season. This is because Nathan Fillion’s “The Rookie” will return to primetime for its Season 7 debut at 10:00 p.m. ET. Given the impressive ratings that the freshman dramedy has already garnered, even before DVR and streaming were taken into account, it’s safe to say that this is good news for “The Rookie”.
As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to share that the anticipated series, “High Potential,” has already secured its 13-episode first season. Unlike many other shows on broadcast networks, it won’t be receiving extra episodes at this time. This decision is partly influenced by scheduling complications arising from the 2023 strikes and partially due to Kaitlin Olson being called upon for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 17 episodes, which interestingly enough, are being filmed in close proximity to the sets of “High Potential.
My Biggest Hope For Morgan When High Potential Is Back
Though others at TopMob would prefer to see Morgan and Karadec linking up romantically in Season 1 and/or beyond, I think their non-confrontational and platonic work relationship is one of the best ways High Potential has avoided TV procedural tropes. And while I’m sure it’d be enjoyable to see Olson’s Morgan and Taren Killam’s Ludo back together for a spell, I don’t really want that either.
Instead, it’s exciting for me to anticipate the show fulfilling its pledge of introducing JD Pardo as the new custodian Tom, who steps in after Morgan’s keen eye for evidence is acknowledged and appreciated by Lt. Soto. It seems that the writers have cleverly planned to develop a relationship between Tom and Morgan, and I appreciate their decision not to rush into an immediate romantic entanglement for her character.
I’m still fond of the fact that she attempted to initiate something by writing her number on a cheese-coated window, which he apparently tried to dial, even if he mistyped it. But what truly sealed the deal was in episode seven, when Tom bravely intervened during the hostage situation where Morgan’s daughter was involved. He even got wounded for his heroics, so Tom has earned quite a bit of admiration from her (and me).
If the series had chosen a less famous actor with a less captivating personality for that role, I wouldn’t feel compelled to entertain these speculative thoughts about their relationship. After all, my enjoyment of the show doesn’t hinge on Morgan being in a romantic pairing. However, given how endearing Olson and Pardo are together, it seems they make an ideal couple at least for this first season.
Despite the fact that it might seem like a lengthy period, you don’t have to wait six weeks to watch the upcoming episodes of “High Potential”. Instead, you can stream them before they air again on ABC on Tuesday, January 7, if you have a Hulu subscription.
