It is a truth universally acknowledged that a politician in possession of ill-gotten gains must be in want of a prison cell. Such was the fate of Mr. Robert Menendez, the former senator from New Jersey, whose fall from grace was as swift as it was poetic. President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, ever the wit, could not resist a sly remark at the senator’s expense, particularly given Mr. Menendez’s vehement opposition to Bitcoin, which he once declared a harbinger of corruption.
This gentleman accused us of using Bitcoin for money laundering and corruption 😂

On a rather unremarkable Wednesday, Mr. Menendez found himself sentenced to an 11-year sojourn in a federal penitentiary, a consequence of his rather unorthodox methods of assisting businessmen from Egypt and Qatar. The discovery of gold bars and a rather substantial sum of cash in his residence did little to aid his cause. One might say his house was rather too full of treasures for a man of his station.
Mr. Menendez, a septuagenarian and erstwhile champion of the anti-crypto cause, had once proclaimed Bitcoin the “ideal choice for criminals.” His disdain for El Salvador’s adoption of the cryptocurrency under President Bukele’s leadership was well-documented, though it now appears his own dealings were far more criminal than any Bitcoin transaction could ever aspire to be.
