When Mahima Chaudhry requested Ajay Devgn and Prakash Jha to not speak about her accident to ‘salvage’ her career; recalls being called 'scarface'

As I reflect on the inspiring journey of Mahima Chaudhry, a resilient spirit who has faced adversity with unwavering grace, I am truly humbled by her determination and courage. The story of her accident, the scars it left on her face, and her decision to keep silent about it is a testament to her strength and her undying passion for her craft.

In my journey as an ardent admirer of the arts, I made my grand entrance into the world of acting with the 1997 film “Pardes”. As my stardom began to bloom, a tragic accident marred my face with scars. Determined not to let this hiccup derail my career trajectory, I reached out to my esteemed co-star Ajay Devgn and director Prakash Jha, humbly asking them to keep the incident under wraps in an effort to preserve and protect my professional growth.

At the start of her acting journey, renowned Indian actress Mahima Chaudhry endured an accident resulting in 67 glass shards being removed from her face. During a conversation with Radio Nasha, she shared that when the mishap transpired, she was unaware of the multiple cuts on her face. It wasn’t until she looked in the mirror while in the bathroom that she comprehended her facial injuries. Earlier, during discussions with Dil Kya Kare director Prakash Jha, she had suggested continuing filming if nothing untoward had occurred. However, the filmmaker declined and proposed they postpone, step out, and arrange new shooting dates instead.

After discussing matters with Ajay Devgn, a renowned actor and film producer, she confided in them upon her return, “Kindly keep this under wraps. I’d like to attempt salvaging my career first.” Ever since, the trio (the celebrities and production team) have maintained discretion on the matter. It wasn’t until 20 years later that Mahima chose to speak up about it publicly. “Remarkable,” she reminisced, “I used to be on set, and everyone could observe the changes.

In a surprising revelation, the actress from Dhadkan admitted that a film magazine had secretly photographed her and labeled her as ‘scarface’. However, there were no conversations about her injury beyond this incident. During a period when she felt trapped and thought she wouldn’t recover, the star of Singham Again reassured her, stating that after her surgeries, everything would be alright. However, she found it hard to trust his words. In her own words, “I was considering alternative career paths. Even now, one of my eyes is smaller than the other, and at that time, the stress was immense.” She also shared that she never faced the camera directly but always slightly turned her face. Ultimately, Dil Kya Kare, co-starring Kajol and Chandrachur Singh, became a hit at the box office.
