When Manoj Kumar demanded 1 rupee in defamation from Shah Rukh over Om Shanti Om spoof; here’s how Yash Chopra helped resolve conflict

Legendary actor Manoj Kumar sadly passed away on April 4th. In a recent interview, his brother, Manish Goswami, shared an incident where Manoj had felt displeased with actors Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan. The cause of the disagreement was a scene from the movie “Om Shanti Om,” in which Khan’s character imitated Kumar’s signature style for comedic effect. Although meant as humor, it didn’t go down well with Kumar, leading him to express his concerns. Manish remembered that both Shah Rukh and Farah eventually visited Kumar to offer a sincere apology, an encounter that was coordinated and attended by the late filmmaker Yash Chopra.

During an interview on Vickey Lalwani’s YouTube channel, Manish Goswami disclosed that Manoj Kumar opted against taking any legal steps following the parody in Om Shanti Om.

I was privy to the revelation that Manoj, at first, asserted his disinterest in monetary compensation, instead requesting a mere symbolic defamation fine of one rupee. Yet, rationality emerged victorious, leading us all to a consensus for an amicable resolution to the matter.

When queried about whether Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan offered an apology, Manish affirmed that indeed, they did apologize. Moreover, he underscored that Yash Chopra was instrumental in resolving the issue as a mediator.

In my expert opinion, I can confirm that I personally witnessed the legendary filmmaker being part of the meeting where Dilip Kumar and Farah Khan paid a visit to Manoj Kumar, aiming to extend their apologies and mend the situation between them.

Reflecting on the year 2007 when Om Shanti Om was released, Manish reminisced, “He found himself quite troubled by these matters. His stance was unwavering in his actions. He knew what he did, and so did the entire nation, who also supported this view. It was heartening to see them come forward and apologize. Now, everything seems to be resolved.

During that period, it seems the actor from Jawan had allegedly confessed during an interview with NDTV that he was at fault and offered an apology to his fellow actor. He explained that he reached out to him in the afternoon, and the other actor responded gracefully, indicating it was not a major issue.

Shah Rukh admitted that making fun of him through spoofs and parodies is usual, yet he believes he should have exercised greater caution and been made aware of the spoof in advance.
