The hit movie “Dabangg,” featuring Salman Khan and Sonu Sood, boasted a legendary track called “Munni Badnaam.” Notably, this song was originally intended for Sonu Sood’s character, but it ended up being assigned to Salman Khan instead.
In a recent chat on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, Sonu Sood recounted being given the chance to play Chulbul Pandey, a role ultimately taken by Salman Khan. He revealed that he was close friends with director Abhinav Kashyap, who informed him about drafting a cop story while working alongside Mani Ratnam.
Kashyap promised him they’d work on it jointly, which made Sonu equally thrilled. Yet, when the time came, Arbaaz Khan shared that Salman Khan had expressed interest and consented to take on the role instead.
At one point, Sonu Sood was presented with the role of Chhedi Singh, which he initially declined. He acknowledged that figures like Arbaaz Khan and the director attempted to persuade him, but he struggled to grasp the character. While they continued looking for other actors for the part, he felt certain within himself that only he could successfully portray the character.
Afterward, Sonu proposed several requirements such as alterations to the character and requested a musical number featuring him. During its production under Farah Khan’s direction, he was conversing with her about specific dance moves and ensuring its success.
Abhinav arrived with both positive and negative updates. The positive news concerned one of the scenes, while the negative was about Salman claiming the song. When I expressed my concern, “This is my song; how can he insert himself like this?”, Abhinav explained it would be done through a raid sequence. I voiced my disagreement, stating that I had only one song. Despite my objections, events unfolded as they may, and in the end, things went as they must. People still recall the song, he remarked.
