As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for delving into the lives of celebrities, I must say Vivek Oberoi‘s journey in the world of Bollywood is nothing short of riveting. His tale of stardom, marked by a series of extraordinary events, is a testament to his resilience and determination.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the enchanting moments shared by Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji in Shaad Ali’s romantic masterpiece, Saathiya. Their on-screen chemistry was nothing short of magical, captivating the hearts of countless cinephiles like myself. However, during the filming of this 2002 classic, the sheer excitement of their fans nearly reached overwhelming proportions, with an astounding 2000 admirers descending upon the set. It was at this point that the director, in a bid to calm the nerves of our beloved Vivek, requested his presence in Rani’s makeup trailer – a move that proved instrumental in maintaining the smooth flow of the production.
During an interview with The Indian Express, Vivek Oberoi reminisced about the times when fans would swarm him during the filming of Saathiya. Looking back, he shared that on April 12, 2002, his movie “Company” premiered, and on this day, they were shooting a memorable scene where he pursues Rani Mukerji. As it was an ordinary day near the railway station owned by Gaiety Galaxy, filming began. By then, Rani had risen to stardom and had a personal security guard with her.
Unexpectedly, at approximately 11 o’clock, a commotion broke out as people started shouting “Chandu Bhai” (Vivek’s character’s name from Company). Although he found it intriguing, things escalated when the crowd swelled from just four or five individuals to nearly two thousand. This caused the entire security setup to crumble. Oberoi explained that he was growing anxious because the day was slipping away. Shaad tried to get him out of there, so he shoved him into Rani’s makeup van and he peered outside the window. He continued, stating that fans were repeating dialogue lines as well.
Ultimately, they needed to summon the police and asked him to leave the premises. Upon opening the door, director Shaad addressed the star of Shootout at Lokhandwala, instructing him to halt, take a look at the audience gathered in his honor. Vivek remembered him saying, “I told you, you’re a star.” Following this, the police escorted him away as if he were an ordinary suspect. They re-shot the scene the following Sunday with appropriate police presence on set.
During the interview, the actor revealed that while filming for a small-budget movie, he didn’t have access to a makeup van like his co-star Rani, instead changing in restaurant and hotel restrooms. He also shared that he often did touch-ups on the street since nobody recognized him at the time.
Vivek even used to carry the tripod on his shoulder and walk with the rest of the crew. Interestingly, the actor shot for 22-23 hours non-stop for Saathiya and used to put newspapers on the bench to take naps and look fresh.
