When Will We Get Our First Look At Jason Momoa’s Lobo? James Gunn Explains Why We’ll Have To Wait

In some instances, actors appear perfectly suited for specific roles, like Jason Momoa embodying DC Comics’ cosmic bounty hunter Lobo. Known for his portrayal of Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, Momoa is slated to premiere as Lobo in 2026’s “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.” Fans are eagerly anticipating a sneak peek at Momoa with full makeup, but it might take a while before that preview becomes available online.

Recently, I attended a meeting with a handful of journalists where James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, presented in Burbank, California. During our hour-long chat, we talked about various characters including Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Last year, his casting was confirmed, and production for ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’ has begun. However, when asked if we might soon see a sneak peek of the character, Gunn shared why it’s not likely.

It will take some time, honestly, since everything is happening in outer space. For Superman, circumstances made it necessary as we knew we’d be filming outside for extended periods. So, we decided to include something from there. However, with Jason, I can’t make any definite statements. I don’t want to sound overconfident because unpredictability is a part of this industry. It’s not a significant issue… We won’t have to film in the middle of London for three weeks like we did with Lobo, so there’s no need to release a picture prematurely.

In public locations where blockbuster films are filmed, it’s impossible to completely prevent people from taking pictures and sharing them online. Consequently, it has become standard in the movie industry to release official images ahead of time, so that viewers see characters as intended. This tactic was employed during the production of Superman, as evidenced by James Gunn revealing an early look at David Corenswet in costume last May 2024.

Clearly, it appears that the upcoming movie “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” from DC Studios won’t include scenes set on Earth. Instead, the entire film is being filmed on secure soundstages. This means that any leaks can be avoided, and DC Studios can avoid having to deal with damage control. They seem to prefer keeping things secret, even if it goes against public demand. For now, fans will have to make do with homemade creations.

Originating from the creative minds of Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen and first appearing in the 1980s, Lobo is a notorious, daring alien mercenary recognized by DC Comics fans for his immense strength, combat skills, and immortality. Even if just a tiny piece of him survives destruction, he has the ability to completely regenerate his body and continue wreaking havoc across the universe.

Lobo, a cherished figure in comic books, has never made an appearance on the big screen until now. His enduring popularity among fans is the reason behind his introduction in the DC Universe early on. While Jason Momoa’s affection for the character sparked initial excitement about bringing him to the big screen, James Gunn stated that the primary aim was to educate a wider audience about what comic book readers have known all along. Comparing Lobo to Deadpool and Harley Quinn, Gunn suggested, is an apt way to understand this decision.

I’m often on the lookout for characters like Deadpool and others who are about to make their debut. Sometimes people might ask, “Who is this character? I don’t recognize them,” especially if they aren’t familiar with comic books. But let me tell you, Deadpool has a massive following in the comic book world! The same goes for Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad and Lobo or Deathstroke, who also have dedicated fan bases.

Gunn acknowledges that the main focus for DC Comics often lies with the Trinity, but he aims to shift this focus. He went on to say…

Characters like Lobo, while they have dedicated fanbases and are beloved among them, do not enjoy the same level of mainstream recognition as figures such as Wonder Woman, Superman, or Batman within the DC Universe. Lobo has always piqued my interest for potential development and exploration in storytelling.

Currently, fans are advised to exercise some restraint as they anticipate the initial glimpse of Lobo. The upcoming movie titled “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” stars Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. It is an adaptation of the comic book with the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, written by Ana Nogueira. Craig Gillespie is directing the film, which commenced principal photography in mid-January.

The movie is scheduled to premiere on June 26, 2026, so we’ve got some time left before then. Keep an eye out here at TopMob for updates about the project and its connection to the first installment of the DC Universe, known as Gods and Monsters.
