The ongoing quest for BioWare’s future Mass Effect game remains vibrant, with fans, including myself, becoming more and more restless as we wonder if the studio intends to carry on one of gaming’s cherished sci-fi epics.
Four years have passed since BioWare shared a sneak peek of the next Mass Effect, after which there’s been total quiet on the project.
What now?
Currently, Bioware hasn’t provided any recent updates. But a year ago, Project Director Michael Gamble did confirm that the upcoming Mass Effect will be worked on by veterans who were part of the original trilogy.
Here’s everything we know about who’s returning to take the reins for Mass Effect 5:
- Mike Gamble will serve as Executive Producer and Project Director. Having been heavily involved in Mass Effect 2 and 3 as an Associate Producer, this is a promising development.
- Derek Watts returns as Art Director, having been a key creative force throughout the original trilogy.
- Parrish Ley takes on the role of Creative Director. He was the Lead Cinematic Animator for Mass Effect 2 and 3.
- Preston Watamaniuk will be the Game Director. He previously served as a Lead Designer for the original trilogy.
On the 7th of May, Michael Gamble disclosed fresh employment opportunities at EA, which included a role for a Senior Technical Artist to contribute towards developing the upcoming Mass Effect title.
Release Date?
The most recent information from BioWare indicates that the upcoming Mass Effect game is currently being developed during the preliminary stages. As suggested by a Giant Bomb morning show discussion between Jeff Grubb and Tamoor Hussain, it seems unlikely that we’ll see a release before 2029 or even 2030. To put it simply, Hussain explained, “It’s located in a galaxy that’s really far away right now.
Grubb emphasized that the main intention behind the N7 trailer was just to alleviate fan concerns by confirming that the project is indeed ongoing.

While this is indeed heartening news, it’s important to note that most of our current knowledge pertains to events from years ago. With the debut of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, there’s a high likelihood that the studio’s primary attention will be directed towards the development of Mass Effect 5.
What Do We Want To See?
It can be challenging to make predictions about a game like Mass Effect 5, as we don’t have much information yet. Still, it’s fun to engage in some informed speculation! I previously discussed potential storylines for the franchise, emphasizing its promising future. We might encounter both new and familiar characters, while also delving deeper into the Reapers’ origins.
As for now, it’s just wishful thinking as we patiently wait. Luckily, there are numerous engaging RPGs to occupy ourselves with, such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which even earned a compliment from Michael Gamble of BioWare in his latest tweet.
