While I’m Happy Jamie’s Story Ended The Way It Did On Yellowstone, There’s One Outstanding Plot Point I Really Wish They Would Have Addressed

As a long-time fan of western dramas who’s seen his fair share of ranch disputes and family feuds, I can’t help but feel a tad unsettled by the way Yellowstone chose to wrap up one of its most intriguing storylines: Rip’s ignorance about Jamie’s actions against Beth.

Major Yellowstone spoilers are ahead! If you are not caught up, you can stream Seasons 1 through 5A with a Peacock subscription and purchase 5B on Amazon.

In wrapping up Yellowstone on its 2024 TV schedule, it struck me that a key plot point was left unresolved: Rip didn’t discover what Jamie did to Beth when they were children. The pivotal moment where Wes Bentley’s character granted Kelly Reilly’s character permission to abort her baby and render her sterile lies at the heart of the conflict between Jamie and Beth. Given that this event is the cause of Rip and Beth’s inability to conceive biologically, it seems odd that this revelation was not part of the final episodes’ resolution.

In wrapping up the gripping fifth season of Yellowstone, I found myself witnessing a long-awaited conclusion to Beth’s bitter feud with her brother Jamie. With cold determination, she exacted her vengeance for their father’s death by taking his life. In a brutal turn of events, Reilly’s character delivered the fatal blows before succumbing himself. The episode concluded as Rip made an appearance to handle the grim aftermath.

In essence, it’s clearer to me now why Rip didn’t learn that Jamie was responsible for Beth’s infertility. Had he discovered the abortion clinic and the decision to render her sterile, Hauser’s character might have exploded into a fury, potentially killing his wife’s brother without a moment’s hesitation.

It’s evident that Beth was the one who had to eliminate Jamie; there’s no mistaking that. Consequently, it makes sense why she didn’t inform Rip about it. In summary, I found it satisfying how Beth and Jamie’s tale concluded.

Yet, it seems as though this significant event in the plot line is left unresolved, given that Rip remains oblivious. As a married couple, Beth and Rip share everything with each other. Therefore, it’s quite striking that such an important piece of information is withheld, especially when the perpetrator is still alive.

In no universe would it likely be beneficial for Jamie if Rip discovered everything that happened; however, it would’ve been satisfying for all three of them to find some resolution regarding this significant, life-changing incident.

In essence, the final episode of Yellowstone largely tied up all its storylines. Jamie met his end, Kayce broke free from the family estate, and Rainwater acquired the ranch. Rip, Beth, and Carter embarked on a new journey at a different ranch, seeking fresh beginnings. Furthermore, the subplots for the bunkhouse crew were also concluded. Yet, an ominous cloud persists over Beth and Rip as he remains oblivious to the real reasons behind her animosity with her brother and their inability to conceive children, which leaves me troubled.

In the spin-off series focusing on Rip and Beth, it seems strange to delve into the conflict when one of the other key figures has passed away. It’s possible that Beth wishes to leave her past behind and focus on a fresh start. Yet, I can’t shake off this sense of impending return of the past, fearing it might negatively impact Hauser and Reilly’s relationship if she doesn’t disclose it sooner.

In summary, failing to address this significant plot point in the last season of Yellowstone leaves me puzzled about how it can be resolved later on. It’s disappointing for me to imagine Rip remaining unaware of an event that significantly altered his partner’s life trajectory forever. Yet, I understand Beth’s desire to maintain secrecy around this matter.

It seems like we’ll only find out more if the issue gets resolved in the next season of “Yellowstone” featuring Rip and Beth, so until then, let’s refresh our memories by re-watching “Yellowstone” on Peacock to understand how the complex relationships led to Jamie Dutton’s demise.
