While Waiting For Mr. Throwback Renewal, The Executive Producers Reflected On That Running Michael Jordan Joke And Their Hopes For Season 2

As a gamer who’s been through countless hours of binge-watching shows, I must say that Mr. Throwback is a refreshing addition to my streaming library. The basketball-themed comedy, starring none other than Steph Curry himself, offers a unique blend of humor, cameos, and a dash of competitive spirit that keeps me engaged from start to finish.

In August earlier this year, Peacock capitalized on the Olympics excitement by debuting a fresh comedy titled “Mr. Throwback“, produced by the ex-team of “Happy Endings”. This series featured basketball sensation, Steph Curry, in the leading role. The executive producers expressed that it was both exhilarating and somewhat frustrating (in an enjoyable way) to collaborate with Curry on this sitcom, and they were already anticipating a second season even before the first episode aired, which was scheduled earlier in the 2024 television lineup. The show is yet to receive renewal news, so I revisited their thoughts about Season 2 and the recurring joke involving Michael Jordan.

That Michael Jordan Joke

In the sitcom, Steph Curry took the lead role, but it was Adam Pally who took charge as Steph’s childhood friend, finding himself in trouble when he tried to exploit the Golden State Warriors for quick profits. The short series of six episodes also featured several entertaining guest appearances, among them Steve Kerr, a former Chicago Bulls point guard now serving as the Warriors’ head coach. During my conversation with creators David Caspe, Matthew Libman, and Daniel Libman, Caspe disclosed:

We adore Steve Kerr; after all, we hail from Chicago where he won our hearts. Having him featured on our program was a thrill, and his jokes about Michael Jordan were the cherry on top – a long-held wish fulfilled for us. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Did Kerr and the other Season 1 guest stars provide plenty of entertainment, but are there aspirations for another season? Daniel Libman mentioned some ideal candidates for potential returns:

Michael Jordan, Anthony Edwards, Draymond Green.

Typically, such names might appear a bit grand for a streaming sitcom, but given the array of characters we saw in Season 1, it seems that anything is possible!

What About Season 2?

There’s been anticipation regarding the fate of “Mr. Throwback” ever since its debut. The show’s three executive producers shared their thoughts on what conditions might lead to a renewal.

  • Daniel Libman: “Just a yes from the people who are in charge, and possibly a huge blast from Cinema Blend, telling everyone to watch.”
  • David Capse: “Please tell people to watch it, and that’s how we get another season. “
  • Matthew Libman: “Hopefully people watch it and love it and talk about it. Steph would love to do more. We would love to do more. Hopefully, people feel the same way.

Although the final outcome for the “Mr. Throwback” team is yet uncertain, it’s definitely worth giving a look, regardless of whether you’re a basketball enthusiast or not. The short run of just six episodes ensures that it won’t require too much time to finish watching it in one go.

With a Peacock Premium subscription, you can now stream the entire first season of the show Mr. Throwback.
