This current season of “The White Lotus” seems to have captivated people all around the globe. This satirical drama series, situated at the White Lotus Resort, changes its scenic vacation backdrop with each season. For this third installment, we find ourselves in opulent Thailand, where the central theme revolves around the exploitation of spirituality by the West, as hinted by the tagline “Karma has a way of finding everyone”.

Intriguingly, ‘The White Lotus’ series stands out due to its sharp exploration of tourism, colonialism, social class, along with an impressive ensemble cast and memorable witticisms, especially in Season 3. For weeks now, audiences have been biting their nails in anticipation of seeing how fate will play its hand. At last, the final episode has arrived, and there’s much to consider.

What’s Going on This Season (and What Are We Dying To Find Out?)

At the hotel, there are several key clusters of new arrivals. One such group consists of the enigmatic Ratliff family: father Timothy (Jason Isaacs), mother Victoria (Parker Posey), their eldest son Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), daughter Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook), and youngest son Lochlan (Sam Nivola). Another group is made up of three old friends who are journeying together – renowned actress Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), conservative Kate (Leslie Bibb), and pragmatic Laurie (Carrie Coon). Lastly, there’s a couple – grouchy Rick (Walton Goggins) and cheerful Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood).

Alongside a multitude of White Lotus staff members, we find characters like Gaitok, a security guard grappling with his circumstances (portrayed by Tayme Thapthimthong), Mook, who is romantically involved with him (played by K-Pop sensation Lalisa Manobal), and Sritala (Lek Patravadi), one of the resort’s affluent co-owners. Although The White Lotus follows an anthology structure, there are recurring characters from previous seasons: Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), who managed the spa in the Hawaii White Lotus during Season 1, and Greg (Jon Gries), a villainous ex-husband to Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) from the first two seasons. With plenty of intrigue unfolding, these are the main characters driving the most crucial storylines heading into the finale.

Regarding the ongoing situation, everyone seems curious about what Timothy plans to do about his embezzlement issues. Will he resort to self-harm or endanger his family? There’s also speculation on whether Rick will reappear in Chelsea’s life. The relationships among these three siblings appear complicated, and some have even raised questions of incest. The friendship between the three problematic women is uncertain as they navigate through Thailand. Another question that arises is how many characters may meet their end this season, as a shooting was hinted at in the first episode. The main mystery to unravel is understanding the events leading up to the shooting incident.

Who Lives, Who Dies, and Who Gets What They Deserve?

The Ratliffs

From the start with “The White Lotus”, hints suggested this conclusion was inevitable. To begin with, the Ratliffs somehow managed to survive until the end of the season. Initially, it appeared that Timothy would assassinate his entire family using tainted piña coladas, sparing only Lochlan for some reason. However, at the last possible moment, he chose not to carry out the crime.

It appeared that Lochlan may have met an ironic end by consuming a protein shake laced with piña colada residue. In Lochlan’s close encounter with death, he claims to have witnessed something akin to the divine. His experience, in his own words, was a struggle towards what seemed like four monks; however, he fell short of reaching them before succumbing. This is exactly what the monks explained to Timothy as the process of dying.

In this Ratliff storyline’s conclusion, several interpretations are plausible, but it primarily centers around Lochlan. Given that he was the only Ratliff sibling who claimed he could live “without,” it was natural for him to be the sole one his father deemed worthy or capable of surviving after Thailand. Earlier in the episode, a troubling conversation between Lochlan and Saxon exposed that Lochlan indeed recalled every detail about their wild night with Chloe. Lochlan portrays himself as a “pleaser,” and he surprisingly seemed to adapt positively to his time spent at the meditation center with the monks.

As Lochlan lies, perhaps near death, upon the pool deck, my family seems oblivious to his plight. It’s only when Timothy finds his youngest son, seemingly lifeless, that he truly grasps the gravity of his actions. Each member of our Ratliff family departs from the White Lotus, irrevocably altered (except for perhaps Victoria). The impact of the Ratliffs on us as viewers may vary depending on who we empathized with most, but it’s clear that they are all set to experience a profound transformation. Now, at least, Timothy has accepted this impending change. Life will carry on.

The Women

Laurie’s speech, which appears to reconcile and partially forgive Jaclyn and Kate, is likely to be remembered as one of the most impactful scenes on television regarding intricate female friendships. Throughout the season, these three women have shared moments of gossip, jealousy, and camaraderie. Despite their past squabbles, they are longtime friends from childhood. Laurie acknowledges that her own melancholy fuels much of this jealousy and most of their discord. Consequently, they share a heartwarming final evening together. Admittedly, they encounter a perilous situation the following day, but they appear to have weathered it well.

Belinda and Zion

In a somewhat ironic turn of events, Belinda and her son found themselves in a bittersweet victory, securing a modest $5 million. However, this triumph was tainted with a heavy price tag. The unexpected twist occurred when Belinda made a move reminiscent of Tanya’s actions from Season 1, abandoning Pornchai to pursue personal advancement. This mirrored Tanya’s words when she abandoned plans to help Belinda open her spa. The unsettling implication was that the cycle of leaving others behind for progress persists. This was particularly chilling coming from Belinda, a character who has embodied morality and hard work throughout the entire series.

Rick and Chelsea

During the course of the season, Chelsea expressed a sense of unease about Rick pursuing his father’s killer. She predicted “trouble in threes.” Regrettably, both Rick and Chelsea, as well as the resort owner Jim Hollinger, were the main casualties this season. It was later revealed that Jim, on his deathbed, was actually Rick’s father (in a twist reminiscent of Star Wars). Furthermore, Chelsea held strong feelings for Rick, stating that if anything bad happened to him, she would be affected as well.

The deaths are deeply tragic, yet they align perfectly with the overall narrative of the season. It seems Karma has caught up with Rick, as his actions led directly to these consequences. Notably, he had expressed a desire to avenge his father’s murder by this man.

Moreover, the scene where Rick and Chelsea are adrift in the water carries an intriguing symbolism that hints at some mysterious bond between them extending beyond this world.

As Mike White explained, the events of Season 3 echo the timeless theme of Greek tragedy – an individual destroying something they cherish while seeking retribution.

Gaitok

Although Gaitok had struggled throughout the season with reconciling his non-violent spiritual beliefs and his job as a security guard, it was ultimately him who fatally shot Rick at Sritala’s urging. In the end, this act of violence seems to have propelled him up the ranks at The White Lotus. It appears that this tragic event may now bring him closer to gaining the affection he desires, much like Belinda, who also seemingly compromised her moral code in a similar fashion.

Wrapping Up

In the final scenes of The White Lotus Season 3, all guests are seen peacefully sailing back to their lives on a tranquil boat ride. Their faces radiated contentment as they sailed off towards new beginnings, unaware of the chaos and carnage that had unfolded at the resort just moments before.
