As a lifelong cinephile and TV enthusiast, I have to say that the New Year’s Eve show on CNN has always been one of my favorite annual traditions. From the glitz and glamour of Times Square to the witty banter between hosts, it’s a spectacle that never disappoints. However, this year’s broadcast took things to a whole new level with comedian Whitney Cummings delivering a roast that had everyone talking.
Being a regular viewer of CNN, I have witnessed my fair share of on-air spats and controversial comments over the years. From Andy Cohen calling out Ryan Seacrest in 2022 to Don Lemon’s inappropriate comment about Kathy Griffin back in 2016, the network has a history of pushing boundaries. So, I can’t say that I was entirely surprised by Whitney Cummings’ jab at CNN’s viewership during her “Roast of 2024.”
That being said, even as someone who appreciates a good joke, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the network and its producers. After all, inviting a comedian to your New Year’s Eve broadcast is like asking a wolf to guard the henhouse – you know things are bound to get messy at some point!
All in all, I think Whitney Cummings’ comment was a harmless joke that added a bit of spice to an otherwise predictable broadcast. And who knows? Maybe her jab will inspire CNN to up its game for next year’s New Year’s Eve party. In the meantime, I’ll be keeping an eye on both CNN and Whitney Cummings to see if their friendship (or feud) blossoms in 2025.
As a final note, I can’t help but wonder what kind of joke Whitney would make if she were invited back next year… Perhaps something along the lines of “I’m playing bigger and bigger venues now. I thought being a mom would mean that less people would want to come see me. I’m now playing like 3,000 seat theaters, which is about the viewership of CNN these days. Not this show though. All eyes are on this show! …and by ‘this show’ I mean the baby monitor in my living room!
This year’s New Year’s Eve show on CNN is sure to be lively, with Whitney Cummings as the main topic of conversation. As we move into the 2025 TV schedule, Cummings didn’t mince words in her roast, even taking a jab at CNN’s ratings while still on the air.
It seems that Andy Cohen criticizing Ryan Seacrest isn’t the most exciting incident during CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast, which has a reputation for getting chaotic annually. Whitney Cummings was among the broadcasters and even conducted a “Roast of 2024.” However, it appears that the network and the show’s team might not have anticipated her making fun of the audience, as expressed by this statement (via @CNViolations):
Nowadays, I’m performing in progressively larger concert halls. Initially, I assumed that becoming a mom would decrease interest in my performances. However, I find myself playing at venues with seating capacities similar to modern cable news networks like CNN, around 3,000 seats. Yet, the attention for this show is exceptional; everyone’s eyes are fixated on it!
Her joke aimed at CNN was quite harsh, and it might have been even more painful for them since their audience is probably larger than usual during that particular night. However, Cummings was invited to the event as a roast comic, so taking a few jabs at them was part of her job as a comedian. Even if some people at the network were slightly annoyed by the comment, they should have anticipated it given her profession.
It seems appropriate for CNN to handle such witty remarks from its on-screen hosts more tactfully. Incidents like Andy Cohen’s critique of an X user in 2022 or Don Lemon’s questionable comment about Kathy Griffin in 2016 are examples of borderline comments that usually wouldn’t be acceptable during broadcast.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pinch when I consider the current state of my favorite networks, MSNBC and CNN. The aftermath of the election night has undeniably left its mark on them. Lately, The Washington Post has delved deep into their ratings woes, while Yahoo News has openly criticized their ratings and even hinted at potential job cuts.
Thankfully, a minor jab isn’t the most terrible situation out there. It appears everyone is in a festive mood, making allowances for humor even on New Year’s Eve. In other words, if Roy Woods Jr.’s joke about Don Lemon’s departure (as reported by Mediaite) was tolerated, then I would argue that light-hearted jokes about ratings and such won’t raise many eyebrows.
For the upcoming New Year’s Eve party on December 31st this year, expectations are high, so if Whitney Cummings is invited again next year, she could definitely raise the stakes even more. I personally would be thrilled to see her return, as I believe the event always benefits from a touch of comedy.
TopMob is welcoming the new year by staying tuned to all the TV series coming back with fresh episodes and keeping a lookout for upcoming movies in 2025 too. Moreover, we’ll check if CNN and Cummings get into a spat following her comments or if this was just a playful joke intended as a roast.
