As someone who has always been captivated by the magical world of Hollywood, I find myself utterly charmed by the heartwarming anecdotes that emerge from the lives of its stars. Auliʻi Cravalho‘s tale of her first encounter with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a prime example of the unexpected and humorous moments that seem to follow these larger-than-life personalities.
Many of us can relate to feeling mortified by our parents’ actions, whether they’re accidental or done for amusement. However, very few have experienced this on a grand Hollywood scale. Moana star Auliʻi Cravalho is no stranger to this sensation, as she recently shared a humorous story about it. The actress reminisced about her initial encounter with co-star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It was then that Cravalho’s mother made a flirtatious remark directed at Johnson.
Recently, I’ve been gracing interviews for the fresh release of Moana 2. During one such chat with People, I shared some behind-the-scenes tales from my time working on this fantastic franchise. When we talk about memorable moments, my first meeting with The Rock certainly stands out. As I remember it, he surprised me with flowers and gave me the warmest embrace. After that, he even hugged my mom! In response to his affectionate gesture, I couldn’t help but joke, “Well, I guess he likes everyone in the family!
And my mom exclaimed, “I’m off for some rock climbing!” What an unexpected statement! That experience is etched into my mind forever.
I must admit, Auliʻi Cravalho’s mother deserves praise for her quick-wittedness. Yet, it’s not hard to imagine why the actress herself might feel a bit surprised by such a direct comment in their first meeting, whether they’re a famous figure or not. However, Cravalho doesn’t seem upset and I think this anecdote will make for a hilarious story she can share at parties or during interviews in the future.

Moana 2 Review: Disney’s Sequel Is Thrilling But Failed To Reach The Quality Of The Original
Dwayne Johnson has firsthand experience with lively mothers, given that his own mother, Mataniufeagaimaleata “Ata” Fitisemanu, is quite vibrant, as depicted in stories Johnson shares about her and through their interactions online. A touching instance they shared was when Johnson bought a house for his mom in 2018 and surprised her with it. Additionally, the matriarch doesn’t hesitate to keep her son grounded by occasionally scolding him for using explicit language on social media.
Of course, a shared closeness with their mothers is only one commonality between Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. They’re also a part of the sweet legacy spawned by the Moana movies, Not only do Cravalho and Rock take great pride in voicing the titular protagonist and the demigod Maui, respectively, they also relish being able to shine a light on Polynesian culture. That feeling certainly seemed to shine through at the Moana 2 in Hawaii, where Johnson was accompanied by his daughters.
In the given situation, Auli’i Cravalho and her team created even more unforgettable moments. Yet, I can’t help but speculate if her mother was there as well, encountering The Rock again. If she did attend, it’s likely that she wouldn’t make another rock climbing joke this time around. Still, I might be mistaken in my assumption.
Moana 2 is now playing in theaters, so go check it out now! Also, stream its 2016 predecessor using a Disney+ subscription.
