Despite not being slated for release in 2025, the casting process for “Sunrise on the Reaping” is a significant event happening as we speak, marked on many calendars. Fans of “The Hunger Games” have been keeping a close eye on it, while also suggesting their preferred choices for key roles in this prequel focusing on Haymitch Abernathy.
Although a well-known actor has been chosen for the part of President Snow, which I’m excited about, there’s a significant opportunity that wasn’t seized that I feel compelled to discuss – I can’t help but think it would have been ideal if it had transpired.
Ralph Fiennes Adds The Hunger Games To His ‘Notorious YA Villain’ Trophy Case
It’s hard to find any flaws in the reasoning behind choosing Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes for the upcoming role of President Coriolanus Snow, given his previous work in “The Hunger Games.” Interestingly enough, the news about this casting coincides with exactly three years since Tom Blyth was cast as the same character in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” In celebration of this new development, producer Nina Jacobson made the following statement:
We aimed to pay tribute to Donald Sutherland by selecting an outstanding actor of this era to portray President Snow, 24 years before Katniss Everdeen stepped into the arena. I’ve longed to collaborate with Ralph Fiennes ever since he left a lasting impact on me in Schindler’s List. It’s truly exhilarating to have him join The Hunger Games cast now.
As a movie aficionado, when I hear “Ralph Fiennes” and “YA,” my mind instantly conjures up memories of his spine-tingling performance as Voldemort in the Harry Potter series. It’s not surprising given his exceptional talent, which he masterfully utilized to bring a chilling Nazi officer to life in Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust drama. This time, he lends those skills to a literary character who moves in circles eerily reminiscent of Voldemort.
Casting through popular culture’s trials is undeniably a wise choice, and it’s particularly effective with this actor from “Conclave”. However, I must momentarily align myself with the supporters of “The Hunger Games”, as “Sunrise on the Reaping” has once again missed an opportunity to highlight families in the arts.

I Still Wonder How Kiefer Sutherland Would Have Done As President Snow
I understand that nepotism isn’t always the best choice, but let me make it clear that my admiration for Ralph Fiennes as the new President Snow remains unwavering. Just as dedicated revolutionaries on TikTok backed Cooper Hoffman to follow in his father’s footsteps as the younger Plutarch Heavensby in “Sunrise on the Reaping”, I wholeheartedly supported Kiefer Sutherland taking on the role of a younger version of his father’s intimidating politician.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to rise in theaters on November 20, 2026.
