‘Who’s the Boss?’ Sequel Scrapped at Amazon

As a die-hard fan of both Who’s The Boss? and Bosch, these recent developments have left me feeling a tad like Tony Danza in that iconic kitchen scene – “Did I stutter?” Indeed, it feels like a stuttering pause in the continuous flow of my TV viewing pleasure.

A pair of IP-based projects at Amazon aren’t moving forward after several years of development.

The streaming platform owned by the tech titan, Freevee, has halted production of a follow-up to the 1980s sitcom “Who’s The Boss?” starring Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano. In contrast, Amazon MGM Studios has ceased plans for a spinoff focusing on Jamie Hector’s character, Detective Jerry Edgar, from the series “Bosch”.

In 2022, the sequel to the popular sitcom “Who’s the Boss?” found its place on Freevee, following a development period of two years at Sony Pictures Television. The studio that owns the rights to the original series was responsible for this move. Ariel Winter will reprise her role as Samantha Micelli, portraying a single mother residing in the same house where she lived in the original show, which aired on ABC from 1984 to 1992. Tony Danza is also expected to return, playing his character who is now retired.

Mike Royce and Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz joined as both writers and executive producers for the show when it moved to Freevee. Previously, the late Norman Lear, who produced the original series under his Embassy Communications, was also involved in the executive production team.

Speaking of Bosch, it was one of two spin-offs that Amazon MGM announced were being developed last year. The other, focusing on Detective Renee Ballard, received a series order in November 2023; Maggie Q portrays the main character, leading a new cold case unit within the LAPD, with John Carroll Lynch also featuring. (The third season of Bosch: Legacy, Amazon’s continuation of the original Bosch series, is scheduled to conclude in 2025.)

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Michael Connelly, the mastermind behind the Harry Bosch book series, is all set to take on an executive producer role for the upcoming series, ‘The Edgar’. He’s joining forces with Laurence Andries and the dynamic duo at Fabel Entertainment, Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate.
