Why ’50 First Dates’ is the Must-Watch Movie This Valentine’s Day!

50 First Dates, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, is steadily ascending in streaming popularity, currently ranked fifth on Amazon Prime Video’s list. This heartwarming rom-com makes for an excellent choice for a Valentine’s Day night in, filled with both charm and emotion. The story revolves around Henry (played by Sandler), a vet in Hawaii, who develops feelings for Lucy (Barrymore), a woman afflicted with short-term memory loss, which means she forgets everything that happened the previous day upon waking up.

As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by the heartwarming tale of Lucy, where Blake Clarke and the ever-charming Sean Aston portrayed her protective father and brother respectively. Given that Lucy is trapped in the day she lost her memory following an accident, they choose to maintain the illusion that she never experienced such a calamity. However, amidst this deception, a tender romance blossoms between Lucy and Henry, who must persistently court her affection.

21 years ago, on February 13, 2004, the movie was released, perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a hit among audiences even though critics weren’t as fond of it. The pairing of Sandler and Barrymore on screen felt very natural, and the film grossed $198 million worldwide, with most of that revenue coming from North America. Nowadays, you can often catch 50 First Dates playing on cable or satellite channels. Although critics rated it 45%, audiences have given it a thumbs up at 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Among the three romantic comedies that Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore appeared in together, such as “The Wedding Singer” (1998) and “Blended” (2014), it’s widely agreed that “50 First Dates” stands out as the superior film. Although “The Wedding Singer” is an excellent throwback to the ’80s with a heartwarming romantic vibe, “50 First Dates” offers more depth and unpredictability compared to their earlier collaboration. Unfortunately, “Blended” was a chaotic movie that managed to rake in $128 million worldwide but failed to impress in North America, where it earned only $46 million.

Watching “50 First Dates” could be an enjoyable choice for a Valentine’s Day movie, and maybe even pair it up as a double-feature with “The Wedding Singer.

‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is the Return of a Beloved Adam Sandler Character

Sandler has been a significant part of pop culture for more than three decades, with his career taking off on SNL in the early 1990s. Notable film roles he’s played include Robbie from “The Wedding Singer,” Bobby from “The Waterboy,” Billy Madison, and undeniably, Happy Gilmore.

29 years have passed since the release of Happy Gilmore in February 1996, and it’s hard to imagine! Despite its relatively small earnings of $41 million globally against a production budget of $12 million, this movie found success on home video, cable television, satellite broadcasts, and eventually streaming platforms. The film boasts a cast of unforgettable characters, such as Carl Weathers portraying golf coach Chubbs, Julie Bowen as Happy’s love interest Virginia, the comical Frances Bay as Grandma, Bob Barker in his cameo as himself, and Christopher McDonald delivering an iconic performance as the obnoxious pro golfer Shooter McGavin.

The much-anticipated follow-up has wrapped up production, and Sandler mentioned they are striving to make it available for viewing in July of this year. Several characters from the original film will reappear, including Ben Stiller as Hal L, as well as some fresh faces. Notable newcomers include Travis Kelce, Eminem, and a number of professional golfers who have taken on roles.
