As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless television shows, I must say that the news of 9-1-1: Lone Star being canceled left me rather bewildered, much like a lost firefighter navigating through a maze of burning buildings. But alas, Ryan Murphy’s recent revelations have brought some clarity to this smoky scenario.

The TV series 9-1-1, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, has had an up-and-down journey. It initially aired on Fox before being terminated after six seasons in 2023. However, ABC later took over the show, and as of September 27, 2024, they’ve been airing its eighth season. The show has maintained its popularity with viewers due to its captivating storylines and characters unfolding episode by episode within a “case-of-the-week” framework. The success of the original show led to a successful spin-off, 9-1-1: Lone Star, offering more of the gripping procedural drama that fans desired.

It was revealed that the series 9-1-1: Lone Star would end after its fifth season (according to Deadline), leaving numerous viewers in disbelief and hoping for a revival. Now, Ryan Murphy has broken his silence on the matter, explaining why the show was terminated while also providing a hint of optimism regarding the future of 9-1-1.

The Reason 9-1-1: Lone Star Was Canceled

Although I was surprised when I learned that 9-1-1: Lone Star was being canceled, the ongoing challenges faced by the main programs with Fox and their subsequent move to ABC, coupled with the cast members leaving before season five, were clear indications of trouble. In a recent conversation with Variety, Ryan Murphy shared some insight on this matter, stating that “unfortunately, we all cherished ‘Lone Star,’ but the finances simply didn’t add up.” He further explained that it was a Disney-owned company airing on Fox, which made it an unlikely fit.

Murphy talks about the 2019 takeover by Disney of 21st Century Fox, which encompassed the 20th Century Fox film and TV studios, excluding the Fox Network where shows like “9-1-1” and “Lone Star” were being broadcast. The financial motivation for the Fox Network to maintain a Disney-owned show was not present, and conversely, Disney had one of its shows trapped on a network where it lacked the rights to air on other platforms. Essentially, this situation proved detrimental for “9-1-1: Lone Star”.

Fans of 9-1-1: Lone Star can take comfort in the knowledge that the final season, wrapping up around early 2025, will be a poignant farewell. In the same interview, Murphy shared his thoughts on the final season, expressing that since they were aware it would be the last one, this influenced every aspect of production, suggesting that the cast and crew poured their heart and soul into creating an unforgettable final season.

The original series, “9-1-1” and its spin-off, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” have achieved significant success, consistently drawing more than 10 million average viewers during their first and fourth seasons. This demonstrates that cable television continues to hold its ground and remains relevant among modern audiences. It’s likely we’ll see a ninth season of the original show. Unfortunately, “9-1-1: Lone Star” has been canceled. However, creator Ryan Murphy hints at the possibility of another spin-off that fans can eagerly anticipate in the future.

Tim Minear and I are currently penning a brand new spinoff series which we’re excited to bring onto your screens come fall… We’ve got a fresh show in the pipeline set in a location I can’t disclose yet, but it promises an enjoyable experience. Interestingly, ‘9-1-1’ has shifted to ABC and has now emerged as the top-rated show on Thursday evenings. Given their enthusiasm for such content, we’re eager to offer them another series that I hold dear.

9-1-1 is currently airing every Thursday on ABC, with 9-1-1: Lone Star airing every Monday on Fox.
