Why Alison Brie Agreed To Glow’s Nude Scenes, Explained

As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of virtual stripping in games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Alison Brie‘s fearless approach to nudity on set. Her commitment to portraying Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder authentically is truly inspiring, especially for those of us who have spent countless hours in front of a screen, albeit in a different context.

Alison Brie openly shared with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit magazine (via ET Online) that the show “GLOW” significantly impacted her life, particularly during filming intimate scenes. She admitted that although she initially faced apprehension about exposing herself on screen for the first time, there were particular factors that led her to agree to these candid moments.

Initially, it was evident from the outset that Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder’s role in the series would feature nudity, which Brie was fully aware of. Moreover, she found a sense of empowerment in these specific scenes. As she put it, “At the time, my passion to be part of the show overshadowed any concerns I might have had.” She believed that the show should authentically reflect real-life experiences, including sexuality, and that it was crucial for their production to encompass all aspects of women’s bodies without causing shame.

Besides Brie, it is also her belief that the nudity in “GLOW” was not intended for exploitation, which gave her the confidence to participate. Additionally, she had the opportunity to collaborate with individuals who put her at ease.

Alison Brie felt comfortable on the set of GLOW

From day one on set for “GLOW,” I was open to the idea of nude scenes. But what truly made a difference was the way they were handled under the guidance of our female director, Jesse Peretz. In a heart-to-heart with my “Community” partner Gillian Jacobs for Interview Magazine, I shared that her leadership not only allowed me to feel comfortable but also sparked a desire within me to bare it all. The reason being, these scenes held significance; they were approached with sensitivity and respect.

Beyond this, Brie felt valued by having a say in the nude scenes portraying her, given accounts of actors unwillingly participating in such scenes without prior knowledge or control over their presentation. As Brie recounted, the most disconcerting aspect of filming any scene is the uncertainty of which take will be used and from what angle it will be shown, only becoming clear much later. In contrast, on “GLOW,” she was allowed to review the shots after they were filmed and offer her feedback.

Since her role in “GLOW,” Brie from “The Community” has been comfortable with showing more skin on camera. She even fought for and included a full-frontal nude scene in “Somebody I Used to Know” for personal reasons, demonstrating her belief that such scenes can add depth to a story. Working on the Netflix series undoubtedly boosted her confidence to take on such roles.
