Why ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Cut Young Avenger Eli Bradley

Captain America: A Daring New Era”

This title refers to the fourth installment in the Captain America movie series, which serves as a continuation from the 2021 Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier”. Notable characters from that series are reprising their roles for “Captain America: A Daring New Era”, including Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, a Black war veteran of the Korean War who received the super soldier serum after Steve Rogers. His significant role in history was initially overlooked until Sam Wilson brought it to light. Living with Isaiah was his grandson Eli, portrayed by Elijah Richardson. Comic enthusiasts will recognize Eli as the character Patriot, an original member of the Young Avengers.

It seems that Elijah Richardson doesn’t reprise his role as Eli Bradley in “Captain America: Brave New World“. Intriguingly, Eli Bradley is not present in the movie at all. During an interview with Screen Rant, Marvel producer Nate Moore revealed that earlier versions of the script included Eli Bradley. As the production grew larger and more characters were introduced, Eli was eventually removed from the film to emphasize Sam Wilson and Isaiah Bradley’s relationship, aiming to deepen their interaction. Moore explained this decision by saying:

Originally, there were initial versions of the script that included Eli’s character, but as we found it challenging to manage so many characters effectively and ensure each had a purpose, we opted to focus solely on Isaiah. This film aims to delve into how Isaiah gets entangled in Sam’s world and examine its impact on him. Additionally, we wanted to develop a strong bond between Sam and Isaiah, without any external influences commenting on their relationship. Consequently, this movie serves to establish that Isaiah is not only a mentor but also a sparring partner for Sam. He is a super soldier. I believe this setup provides ample opportunity for Sam to hone his physical abilities, yet the nature of their relationship might pose challenges for Isaiah in the future.

Eli Bradley made his entry as the third member of the Young Avengers in the MCU, joining Cassie Lang from the Ant-Man films and Avengers: Endgame, as well as the younger versions of Billy and Tommy Maximoff, better recognized as Wiccan and Speed, who appeared in WandaVision. At the onset of the Multiverse Saga, it seemed that Marvel Studios was committed to forming the Young Avengers, with Kid Loki debuting in Loki, Kate Bishop emerging in Hawkeye, America Chavez introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and an older version of Wiccan appearing in Agatha All Along. However, it seems that Marvel Studios’ strategy for the Young Avengers has evolved, as Ms. Marvel starts to gather the team in The Marvels.

What’s the Status of the Young Avengers in the MCU?

Although Marvel Studios has hinted at the Young Avengers in multiple films and streaming series, they haven’t confirmed any official projects about them yet. The ending of “The Marvels” where Kamala Khan calls upon Kate Bishop and mentions Cassie Lang, comes the closest to suggesting a Young Avengers team emerging in the MCU. However, the underperformance of “The Marvels” at the box office might have made Marvel Studios hesitant about moving forward with such a project.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Iron Lad, a younger version of the villain Kang the Conqueror, plays a significant role within the Young Avengers team. With Marvel deciding to alter Kang’s narrative following Jonathan Majors’ dismissal, this could potentially complicate the future plans for the Young Avengers even further. The production of Captain America: Brave New World, which underwent numerous revisions off-screen, might have led the studio to minimize Eli Bradley’s presence to avoid giving the impression of another Young Avengers hint.

After that, Marvel offered fans a glimmer of anticipation. Not only was February 9, 2025, Super Bowl Sunday, but it also signified the 20th anniversary of the Young Avengers’ debut. Marvel Entertainment even unveiled a commemorative video highlighting the team’s past. Interestingly, this video included MCU character Ms. Minutes, voiced by Tara Strong, as the narrator, potentially connecting the Young Avengers and the MCU in viewers’ minds. Although it wasn’t a major declaration, it seems that the Young Avengers remain an important focus for Marvel Studios, but one that may not come to fruition until after the Multiverse Saga. If this is true, by the time Marvel produces a Young Avengers project, the team might be old enough to take over from the main Avengers.
