Why Carrie-Anne Moss Says Turning Down Movie Roles to Focus on Being a Mom Was a “No-Brainer”

Carrie-Anne Moss has no regrets about choosing to focus on motherhood over her career.

In a recent conversation with The Independent, the actress shared her thoughts on why she declined major film offers during the time when the Matrix series was experiencing tremendous success.

Following the massive success of The Matrix, I decided to take an extended break to spend time with my children,” Moss clarified. “I recall feeling torn at times, experiencing a slight pang of longing as I was offered fantastic opportunities that would have been significant milestones.

She went on to say, “I recall cradling my newborn in my embrace, and at that moment, I pondered, ‘Will what truly matters at the end of my life be another film credit or the moments spent with my child?’ The answer was immediate – no. And I’m grateful for making that choice, as it spares me from that potential regret.

As a passionate fan, I had the thrill of portraying Trinity in the renowned Matrix franchise. Standing alongside Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburn was an unforgettable experience. My journey began with the 1999 cult classic, masterfully directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, and continued through two sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions”.

Afterward, Moss chose to refocus on her acting profession, reappearing as her character in the 2021 film “The Matrix Resurrections.” Nevertheless, Warner Bros. opted for a dual release strategy, premiering it both in cinemas and on streaming platforms during the same year, which had an effect on the movie’s box office earnings.

She found the release strategy for “The Matrix Resurrections” unusual, as it was made available on a streaming platform (HBO Max). However, she doesn’t spend much time pondering other people’s opinions. As she often says, one can only control their own experience. For her, that movie was a truly special gift, and she thoroughly enjoyed being part of its creation.

Moss, together with her husband Steven Roy, has three offspring – two boys and a girl. After re-entering the field, she’s featured in various productions such as Jessica Jones, Tell Me a Story, Wisting, The Acolyte, and FUBAR, among others.
