This idea was brought up to co-host Charles Barkley, who believes this scenario is highly unlikely for a major reason.
Charles Barkley, famously known as “The Round Mound of Rebound,” has frequently expressed his disappointment over the cancellation of Inside on various platforms, including podcasts and talk shows like The Bill Simmons Podcast. During a recent conversation on the latter, host Bill Simmons suggested moving the production that was at TNT to another network airing NBA games as a potential resolution. However, Barkley has shown some skepticism due to one key factor – or perhaps, one influential individual.
It seems unlikely that Ernie would attend, as it appears he’s quite settled in Atlanta and may not leave the city.
Ernie Johnson, a long-standing sports journalist, has been associated with TNT for many years, starting as the host of Inside the NBA since 1990, following its debut in 1989. Since the show is produced in an Atlanta studio, it’s accurate to say that Atlanta serves as Johnson’s home base for quite some time. It’s possible he might not be too eager to relocate himself and his family if the production were unexpectedly transferred to another network based somewhere else in the U.S. However, I can’t help but ponder whether Johnson could be persuaded if such a change occurred.
Prior to Charles Barkley abandoning his retirement, he made a compelling observation about why it’s challenging for ESPN and similar networks to replicate the authenticity of Inside the NBA.
Absolutely, there’s a lot more to consider besides Ernie Johnson’s hypothetical unwillingness to move that could prevent a shift from Inside. At minimum, some form of agreement would be required to transfer the TNT-operated production to another party. Additionally, there are likely other bureaucratic hurdles that need to be navigated. In summary, while Bill Simmons’ idea isn’t outright impossible, it currently appears unlikely.
Regarding Charles Barkley, it appears he’s decided to stay with TNT after retracting his initial retirement plans for this year. Previously an NBA MVP, he recently signed a new contract in an effort to support the continuity of his colleagues’ positions. Intriguingly, he mentioned that he walked away from $100 million by making this decision. During a recent interview over the summer, Barkley expressed discomfort about the situation and expressed sympathy for those who might be impacted.
Although Sir Charles has secured a new deal for Inside the NBA, there’s still cause for some apprehension about its future. A significant event would need to occur for the situation to improve drastically. It’s uncertain whether this change will involve a shift to a different network or not.
