Why Colin Jost Waited To Ask Scarlett Johansson Out On A Date When He First Started Working At SNL

As a hardcore fan of both Saturday Night Live (SNL) and Hollywood, I couldn’t help but be thrilled when I heard that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost finally tied the knot in 2020. Their love story began long before they were an item; they first met back in 2006 when Johansson hosted SNL for the first time, and Jost was just starting out as a writer on the show.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost tied the knot in 2020, and their love continues to shine brightly. They share a beautiful son named Cosmo, and Johansson supported her husband by giving him a minor role in her latest production, “Fly Me to the Moon.” Their romantic journey began at Saturday Night Live (SNL), where Jost is the Weekend Update anchor, and Johansson has graced the stage multiple times as a host. Now, Jost shares insights about their initial encounter on SNL and reveals why he didn’t ask Johansson out when they first met.

Scarlett Johansson spoke openly about her marriage to Colin Jost in an interview with The New York Times. Although they didn’t begin dating until 2017, they had previously known each other for years. Their first encounter occurred in 2006 when Johansson hosted SNL and Jost was a new writer for the esteemed television program. At that point, romance wasn’t on Jost’s mind as he focused on establishing his career at Saturday Night Live. The comedian shared with the publication:

In my initial year as a writer, I didn’t even consider the idea of asking a host out on a date. Instead, my primary concern was about securing employment for the year.

The “Black Widow” actress, who has previously hosted the show several times, met her future husband on various occasions after her 2006 stint. They crossed paths in the years 2007, 2010, and 2015. However, during these encounters, both were involved with other partners, preventing them from truly connecting. In 2017, when she hosted for the fifth time, they were both single. By this point, the “Tom & Jerry” actor had been working at SNL for over a decade and felt ready to take action. He described his initial date with his now-wife:

After our weekly host dinner on Tuesday evenings, I proposed going out for a drink with her. We continued our night with drinks, ending around 4 a.m. It proved to be an enjoyable experience, though it negatively impacted my writing productivity at the time. However, looking back, it significantly contributed to my future marriage.

Mr. Jost’s writing didn’t falter, contrary to his claim, and Johansson delivered an exceptional hosting performance on SNL. The “Complicit” sketch showcasing Johansson as Ivanka Trump became a viral sensation, while the quirky mermaid skit left a lasting impression. Moreover, their first date during the show turned out to be an added advantage for both, and they have been a couple ever since. With her wit and humor, Johanson proves an ideal match for Jost on SNL.

At the renowned Saturday Night Live (SNL), not only the celebrity couple fell in love, but also others like Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCary. While working as a writer at SNL, McCary and Stone crossed paths leading to their marriage. Similarly, Pete Davidson has had romantic encounters with notable figures such as Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande during his tenure as a cast member. The late-night setting of SNL teems with humor, providing an ideal backdrop for serendipitous meetings. Fortunate are Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson who waited until the perfect moment to ignite their enduring romance.

Scarlett Johansson stars in the new movie “Fly Me To The Moon,” now showing in theaters and coming soon to Apple TV+. Don’t miss Colin Jost on “Saturday Night Live,” with Season 49 episodes currently streaming on Peacock.
