As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m quite intrigued by the new kid on the block – Pop Culture Jeopardy! Streaming it with a Prime subscription has become a fun addition to my 2024 TV schedule. Colin Jost, known for his Weekend Update co-anchoring stint on Saturday Night Live, is taking on hosting duties here, and he seems quite at ease in this new role, thanks in part to the encouragement of his SNL deskmate, Michael Che.
If you haven’t heard, “Jeopardy!” has debuted a fresh spin-off, straying from its initial network background. The entertaining “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” is now accessible for streaming with a Prime membership and it’s set to be a standout addition to the 2024 TV lineup. Stepping into hosting duties is Colin Jost, a co-anchor from “Saturday Night Live”‘s Weekend Update segment. Jost reveals he wasn’t overly anxious about assuming this new role, attributing his confidence largely to his “SNL” desk partner, Michael Che.
It’s clear to everyone that the change in hosts for Jeopardy! following Alex Trebek’s passing took some time. Interestingly, this wasn’t unfamiliar terrain for its sister show during development, as producers considered several other potential hosts before ultimately choosing Jost. The former Fly Me to the Moon star recently spoke with The Ringer about Pop Culture Jeopardy! and emphasized that a host’s ability or inability to read the script convincingly can significantly impact their success in leading the game show. As he put it, “A host’s cold reading skills can either make or break their tenure on the show.
One piece of information I received is that when they’ve had guest hosts on the show, some of them struggle more with cold reading due to the challenge of interpreting clues quickly and accurately when they are presented out of sequence. Despite knowing all the clues ahead of time, the order in which they appear remains unknown.
The amount of reading may seem slight and simple enough, but to be able to deliver each question clealry (and in any order) while maintaining contestants’ order, and still keeping audiences interested is indeed a tall order. That’s why some of the best game show hosts have stuck around for that long, while others have fizzled. I do think that Jost has the chops to measure up to some of the best, in his own humorous yet intellectual style.
In a candid moment, the 42-year-old revealed that it was his Saturday Night Live colleague, Michael Che, who significantly boosted his belief in his hosting skills and quick wit. This confidence-building stemmed from their longstanding Weekend Update tradition of exchanging jokes live on stage, as he shared.
One way of paraphrasing your statement could be: The experience of cold-reading and performing live joke swaps on SNL with Michael Che surprisingly prepared me well for this situation since it instilled confidence in me. Additionally, knowing I wouldn’t be putting myself in a racially compromising position by not reading a clue was reassuring as well.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the hilarious “joke swap” between my favorite duo – and it’s fantastic to see Che consistently adding fresh humor to this segment! Kudos to Jost for always being ready to adapt and keep up with it. It’s no surprise that honing his skills in this segment has made him more than prepared to tackle other cold reading challenges effortlessly.
Previously working on his own game show project, the cast member from “Coming 2 America” shared insights and revealed an unexpected encounter. This meeting took place with none other than Michael Che, before they teamed up for their pop culture hosting role. Interestingly, it was through this project that he crossed paths with Michael Davies, a renowned producer and writer of many popular game shows throughout history. In his own words:
As a passionate fan, I’ve found myself collaborating on a game show with the esteemed Michael Davies – a chance encounter that I never anticipated given my lack of knowledge regarding his past work on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Jeopardy! My points of reference were purely these two iconic shows. What I sought was a trivia-focused game, one that carried the weight of serious intellectual pursuit. I’ve always been wary of game shows that lean too heavily on gimmicks or physical challenges. Instead, I aimed to incorporate an intellectual component, reminiscent of what made Jeopardy! so captivating for me.
It’s quite a coincidence, isn’t it, that the writer’s encounter with Davies feels almost destined in its timing, given how it led to securing the game show job. Networking seems to play a significant role, doesn’t it?
I was eagerly anticipating Michael Che appearing on the Pop Culture Jeopardy! stage, so it’s exciting to learn they’re discussing creating a game show together. Plus, collaborating with one of television’s top game creators is even more intriguing. Here’s hoping we get to see it sooner rather than later!
Regarding Jost on “Pop Culture Jeopardy!”, I’ve watched a few episodes and he appears quite at ease, reminiscent of his talent under Michael Che’s guidance. Here’s to hoping his self-assuredness continues throughout this season, and future ones as well.
