David Cronenberg isn’t rushing to be the first one at the theater to see the latest blockbuster.
In a recent conversation with Jim Jarmusch for Interview Magazine, this influential figure in the body horror genre admitted that he dislikes the social aspect of going to the cinema.
He explained further that, apart from his hearing issues causing him to prefer content with subtitles, and the poor parking situation in Toronto being another factor, he had ceased attending cinemas for quite some time.
Or:
Beyond mentioning his preference for subtitled shows due to his hearing difficulties and his dislike of Toronto’s parking, he elaborated on why he no longer frequents movie theaters.
Both versions convey the same information in a clear, natural, and easy-to-understand manner.
David Cronenberg occasionally watches movies in traditional cinemas, especially during film festivals, but he’s noticed the quality of projection isn’t always top-notch. During a conversation with Spike Lee and others in Venice, he humorously commented about watching Lawrence of Arabia on his watch and seeing every single camel. In essence, what he meant was that he doesn’t find the cinema experience particularly impressive, possibly because he’s grown older and no longer feels that sense of shared enjoyment with others.
The filmmaker behind “The Shrouds” appears equally excited that advancements in filmmaking technology have occurred throughout the years, enabling greater creative freedom.
Cronenberg noted that discussions about streaming services can evoke similar levels of enthusiasm as our post-movie theater conversations. While it’s different, he doesn’t believe it’s inferior. Additionally, he no longer yearns for the traditional filmmaking process. Editing and cutting were difficult for him, and they felt quite limiting. Now, there’s more control, which is appealing, especially since we directors have a certain need to control our work when creating a film.
He mentioned, “I cherish the classic movies, yet I lack the compulsion, akin to Spielberg’s, to physically record them on film.
