If you’re a fan of the initial Dexter and haven’t yet caught up with Dexter: Original Sin, either on Showtime or Paramount+, you might be missing out on something truly captivating. This prequel has swiftly climbed to my list of favorite streaming shows, making it essential viewing for those still pondering over the original series. My personal appreciation for it stems less from unresolved questions and more from witnessing the evolution of the Harbor Bay Butcher’s methods.
In the latest addition to the franchise, Michael C. Hall’s comeback in “Resurrection” is subtly foreshadowed, with Patrick Gibson skillfully portraying a younger Dexter Morgan. The delight of observing the character embark on his journey as an emerging vigilante murderer is, in my opinion, the most captivating aspect of this fresh take on the spinoff.
The Best Thing About Dexter: Original Sin Is Its Imperfect Dexter Morgan
In the series Dexter: Original Sin, Dexter Morgan is just starting his career as a serial killer. This is evident throughout each episode, causing me discomfort whenever he casually consumes food from his victims’ refrigerators or carelessly handles his “trophies.” He frequently disregards Harry’s code, and it seems that his recklessness may lead to severe consequences by the end of Season 1.
As Dexter departs from crime scenes, potentially revealing his identity, it remains captivating to observe. This is much like the allure of reading “Batman: Year One,” where Bruce Wayne honed both his detective and vigilante abilities as Batman on-the-job. Similarly, Dexter experiences similar growth struggles in attempting to uphold Harry’s code, which might be more imperfect than we initially understood from the main series.
It’s exciting to observe, but also serves as a chilling reminder that Dexter Morgan is a truly dangerous individual. Despite his role as a vigilante murderer, which already puts him in a morally questionable position, “Dexter: Original Sin” underscores the depth of his potential for evil. We’ve seen instances where he appeared on the verge of losing control and killing regardless of any moral guidelines, making it intriguing to see when and how he might finally cross that line.
Dexter’s Mistakes And Other Elements Keep The Tension In The Series Thick, Despite Being A Prequel
Original Sin, since fans of the original series are aware of Dexter’s ultimate fate. However, it’s important to consider how showrunner Clyde Phillips and his team will keep viewers engaged without resorting to traditional methods like Dexter being caught for his crimes or facing long-term imprisonment. Instead, they must find other ways to keep us intrigued about the events unfolding in the series.
For enthusiasts of Dexter, the enjoyment lies in observing his blunders and subsequent lessons. Lately, one major slip-up has been discarding bodies in a swamp, where alligators devour them. It’s not as neat as his later “trash bag in the ocean” strategy, and it seems inevitable that he’ll learn this lesson the hard way soon.
10 Shows Like Dexter And How To Watch Them
In addition to excelling at the storyline, the show has skillfully introduced previously unseen characters, including Sarah Michelle Gellar as CSI Chief Tanya Martin. It’s fascinating to see such a renowned actress from one of television’s most binge-worthy series in this role. There’s an air of enigma surrounding her character that leaves me curious as to why she wasn’t mentioned in the initial Dexter series.
In much the same way, Deb’s companion Sofia develops into Dexter’s girlfriend in the first season. For those who haven’t seen it, their relationship at this stage is quite distinct from what he later shares with his future spouse Rita. Given their youth, one wouldn’t anticipate a deep or serious involvement between them, nevertheless.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that this is the initial appearance of a substantial amount of screen time for Dexter and Deb’s father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater. One captivating aspect of this show lies in observing Harry’s interactions with his son, Dexter, as it becomes evident that he might share similar disturbances and abnormalities. In retrospect, it seems obvious that there were signs of something unusual about him when he advocated for training his violent son to kill instead of pursuing therapy.
The assortment of elements found in Dexter: Original Sin keeps things exhilarating and maintains an intense atmosphere reminiscent of the original series. Combined with its weekly villain structure, it captures the essence of what initially drew viewers to the show.
Patrick Gibson Is A Great Young Dexter
Regardless of Patrick Gibson’s captivating portrayal of Sturmhond in “Shadow and Bone”, it’s difficult not to envision him excelling in no other role quite like Dexter Morgan. While his convincing interpretation of Michael C. Hall’s performance was undoubtedly a factor in securing the part, the striking resemblance he displays in embodying the character is truly remarkable. This extraordinary likeness imbues Dexter with an authenticity that transcends mere mimicry, making each episode more immersive and gratifying to experience.
Previously, I noted that his acting style stands out distinctly and wildly. At times, his gentle demeanor transforms into a hidden aggressive character, suggesting he may not be proficient at hiding his true self yet. Oh, and did I mention he has an enormous appetite? Whether it’s linked to his role as a serial killer or just being a 20-year-old, I can’t help but compare him to a garbage disposal with the way he devours food. But hey, no judgment here, because those Cuban sandwiches on this show look so mouthwatering, I’d likely gobble up two if they were served regularly.
Despite other factors, he is the main draw for watching this fantastic series. Gibson, along with the rest of the talented cast, adds an extraordinary touch that makes the show exceptional, and I believe it has the capability to last as long as “Dexter.” Here’s to hoping for its continued success! I would be thrilled if it continues!
Don’t miss out on the latest installments of “Dexter: Original Sin”! You can watch them every Friday on Paramount+, or if you don’t have access to the streaming platform, tune in to Showtime on Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET.
