As a dedicated Star Wars gamer, I find myself immersed in the rich history of the Jedi Order, particularly those introduced during the prequel era. From the humble Younglings to the esteemed Jedi Masters on the High Council, each character adds depth to this epic universe. One such Jedi that caught my attention is Ahsoka Tano, who made her debut in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” back in 2008. She was assigned as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan following his promotion to Jedi Knight amidst the fierce Clone Wars sweeping across the galaxy. It was strategically important for the young Knight to have a Padawan to guide and learn from during such turbulent times.
In the course of “The Clone Wars” TV show, Ahsoka Tookk appeared frequently as one of the main characters. Throughout this series, she engaged in battles against numerous Sith Lords, Mandalorian warriors, and many others. Regrettably, an event prior to the conclusion of the Clone Wars caused Ahsoka to depart from the Jedi Order, and she has not returned since then. However, it’s important to note that she did not transform into a Sith or any similar path – despite her challenging journey, Ahsoka persisted in upholding justice across the galaxy; she simply chose to do so without being part of the Jedi Order.
Throughout her years of activity in the “Star Wars” universe, fans became enamored with Ahsoka. She may have started out as an inept 14-year-old in training, but Ahsoka quickly became a lethal Jedi of nearly unmatched power and ability. Anyone who’s binged every episode of “The Clone Wars” knows the story all too well, but others who’re not in the know might wonder what pushed Ahsoka to leave the Jedi Order and not look back. For those people, this is Ahsoka’s story.
Ahsoka joined the Jedi Order as a youngling
Just as many individuals educated by the Jedi Order during the tranquil era of the Galactic Republic, Ahsoka Tano began her training at a very young age. While much of her time with the Jedi remains unseen in movies and television shows, the “Tales of the Jedi” mini-series reveals how Ahsoka eventually joined the ranks of those tasked with maintaining peace and justice within the Republic. In the episode titled “Life and Death,” we witness Ahsoka as an infant, under the watchful eye of her mother.
As part of her coming-of-age ceremony, Ahsoka gets kidnapped by a ferocious cat with fangs, which carries her off to its den. Instead of eating the young Togruta, Ahsoka employs the Force for the very first time, subduing the beast. Later on, she’s spotted returning to her village atop the wild creature. Upon seeing this, the village elder recognizes that Ahsoka possesses the Force and deems it necessary for her to be educated by the Jedi Order, as they can provide her with proper training.
During that era, it was customary for the Jedi Order across the galaxy to locate children gifted with the Force and transport them to Coruscant. This is what transpired with Ahsoka, as she was handed over by her family to the Jedi Order. Jedi Master Plo Koon found her and escorted her to Coruscant for training at the Jedi Temple in the Galactic Republic’s capital city. Ahsoka completed her education and was eventually selected by Jedi Grand Master Yoda to serve as Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice.
Ahsoka becomes Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan
Following his heroic actions on Geonosis, Anakin Skywalker was knighted and eventually received a Padawan learner of his own – Ahsoka Tano, despite his initial reluctance. Despite not wanting a Padawan and being hesitant about accepting her as his trainee, Anakin eventually warmed up to Ahsoka after they met during the Battle of Christophsis. He affectionately nicknamed her “Snips,” which she kept throughout their partnership. Over time, Anakin took Ahsoka under his wing and trained her to become a skilled Jedi.
During the tumultuous era of the Clone Wars, I found myself as a dedicated Padawan, growing under the tutelage of esteemed Jedi Masters. Among them was Anakin Skywalker, whose guidance led me to ascend the ranks and assume the dual roles of Jedi Commander and Padawan-commander for the 501st Legion. Under his mentorship, I honed my skills in the art of lightsaber combat, mastering the reverse-grip Shien variant of Form V. This transformation turned me into a formidable Jedi, capable of wielding one or two blades with unmatched precision and lethality.
On multiple instances, Ahsoka Took charge of troops without her master, and at certain points, they collaborated closely. During this period, Ahsoka developed a strong bond with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin affectionately referred to her as Snips while providing the necessary guidance for her survival. This included preparing her to confront even a Dark Lord of the Sith. However, she wouldn’t encounter Darth Vader until much later, after parting ways with the Jedi Order, when she thought her ex-master had perished.
Ahsoka is blamed for an explosion at the Jedi Temple
At about age 17, after spending three years as a Padawan trainee, Ahsoka Tano experienced a devastating explosion at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. This blast, disguised as a bombing, wiped out the hangar and claimed the lives of 8 Clone Troopers, 12 crew members, and 6 Jedi. As investigations ensued to determine the perpetrator, various suspects were considered before the evidence implicated Ahsoka Tano. Initially, it was thought that an outsider from the Jedi Order was behind the attack.
Mace Windu, a seasoned Jedi Master, suspected that the explosion was orchestrated to discredit the Jedi and their involvement in the Clone Wars, an action that didn’t always win them public favor. However, upon examination, there was enough proof to implicate Ahsoka Tano as the perpetrator, leading to her arrest. This posed a challenge because the Jedi Council rarely took legal action against its own members, and Ahsoka couldn’t be brought to trial by the Galactic Republic while she remained a part of the Jedi Order.
Consequently, the Jedi Council chose to expel Ahsoka Tano from their ranks, allowing her to face charges for treason and murder. This decision left Ahsoka distraught, but it infuriated Anakin Skywalker, who strongly felt that she was innocent. During this time, Ahsoka was grappling with her legal issues and the fact that she was no longer a Jedi, while her former master was on a mission to find the real culprit. As the trial of Ahsoka Tano commenced on Coruscant, it marked the beginning of a challenging period for our protagonist.
The trial of Ahsoka Tano
Following her expulsion from the Jedi Order, Ahsoka Tano faced a trial for the charges brought against her. This step was taken after she was jailed and managed to break free, causing the Jedi Order to remove her Padawan braid as a symbol of her dismissal. In her trial, Ahsoka asserted her innocence, but her accuser, Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin, showed little conviction. He hurled numerous accusations of treason at the young ex-Jedi Padawan, yet Ahsoka was not alone in this ordeal.
She was represented by none other than Padmé Amidala – the woman who secretly wed Anakin Skywalker and later gave birth to Luke and Leia. As she was being grilled mercilessly by the prosecution, Anakin plunged headfirst into the investigation, scrutinizing every angle to unmask the real culprit. This relentless pursuit eventually brought him to the quarters of Barriss Offee, a Jedi Padawan and friend of Ahsoka Tano, with whom she had fought on Geonosis. However, it was revealed that Offee had grown disenchanted with the Jedi Order’s role in the Clone Wars.
In an attempt to weaken the position of the Order, Barriss decided to cause trouble by setting off a bomb in the hangar and falsely accusing Ahsoka. However, when Anakin tried to reveal her actions, Barriss found herself no match for the Jedi Knight. She was arrested but refused to back down, insisting on a trial. There, she implicated Offee as the real culprit, forcing Admiral Tarkin to dismiss all charges against Ahsoka. With her innocence restored, Ahsoka was allowed to rejoin the Jedi Order once more.
Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order
A significant event unfolds in Ahsoka Tano’s journey post her trial. The Jedi High Council expresses regret for any misunderstandings and extends an invitation for her to join the Order once more. Jedi Master Mace Windu labels her ordeal as her “tremendous test,” and she receives praise from every council member, including Grand Master Yoda. Instead of accepting her Padawan braid from Anakin, she gently shuts his hand, expressing her choice to not resume her apprenticeship under him.
This incident leaves Anakin in disbelief, as he views Ahsoka’s departure as a breach of trust towards him and a letdown for the Jedi Order. This event is pivotal because it significantly contributes to Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader. Prior to this change, he endeavors to persuade Ahsoka to come back, but she clarifies that the Council’s lack of faith in her was so profound that she couldn’t return. No matter what Anakin says, she remains resolute in her decision. However, he comprehends that she wishes to part ways with the Order.
Currently, Ahsoka subtly suggests her awareness of his relationship with Padmé, yet they don’t delve deeper into the topic. As he looks on, Anakin’s ex-apprentice departs from the Jedi Temple to embark on a new life outside its walls within the Galactic Republic. Unbeknownst to both, the Republic was about to crumble, and troubled times were approaching as Anakin’s descent into the dark side of the Force grew imminent.
Ahsoka’s life outside the Jedi Order
From a gamer’s perspective, I’d say: My journey as a Jedi didn’t stop when I left the Order; instead, it branched into countless thrilling escapades. Though I no longer bear the title of Jedi, I continue to embody its spirit, aiding those in need across the cosmos. I find myself on Mandalore, toppling the reign of the resurrected Darth Maul. I manage to outwit Order 66’s execution with the assistance of my loyal Clone Trooper comrade, Rex, who I helped free from his control chip. In a final act of deception, I stage my own demise and vanish, adopting the alias “Ashla” on the hidden planet Thabeska.
Eventually, she’s tracked down by an Inquisitor, whom she manages to eliminate, which ultimately leads her to align with the Rebellion against the Empire. In “Star Wars: Rebels,” Ahsoka is revealed as Agent Fulcrum, a mysterious figure who guided missions for various rebel groups, including the Spectres led by Hera Syndulla. She comes close to being defeated in a battle with Darth Vader, but through some intriguing temporal manipulations made possible by the World Between Worlds, Jedi Ezra Bridger rescues her.
Ahsoka invests her time learning about the World Between Worlds, eventually accepting Sabine Wren as an apprentice. However, their partnership doesn’t last, leading them to part ways. Eventually, she encounters Luke, a young man linked to her past mentor. Additionally, she teams up with Din Djarin and Grogu, but later embarks on a journey to another galaxy, aiming to prevent the resurrection of Grand Admiral Thrawn who had disappeared at the end of “Rebels”. Unfortunately, she is unable to thwart his return, setting the stage for their confrontation in “Ahsoka” season two.
