As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when I hear about the possible return of the Dead Space franchise. The original games were a staple during my PS3 days, and the remake last year was a welcome blast from the past.
Prior to referring to Death Stranding, the acronym DS had been associated with the popular horror series Dead Space. This franchise saw its resurgence following the release of the remake last year, and although some anticipate a sequel titled Dead Space 2, there was nearly a fourth installment in the series, Dead Space 4.
It seems that discussions regarding a new installment, the fourth game in the Dead Space series, have taken place. However, Electronic Arts (EA Games) did not show interest in the proposal for its development.
Dead Space 4 isn’t Happening?
More recently, in an interview with Dan Allen Gaming (through Resetera), the original creators of Dead Space – Glen Schofield, Bret Robbins, and Christopher Stone – disclosed that they had conceived a concept for Dead Space 4 and even presented it to EA as late as this year.
According to Schofield, the original 2008 game’s director, they, along with two others, had attempted creating a fourth installment in the Dead Space series, which he expressed as, “We genuinely gave it a shot – the three of us.” Stone, the animation director for Dead Space, concurred, stating that all three of them yearned to bring forth the project.
They didn’t elaborate on the reasons behind EA turning down their pitch, but it’s likely that the numbers related to Dead Space’s popularity following the remake played a role in their decision. Schofield adds:
“We didn’t press the issue; they declined our offer for now, expressing thanks and various pleasantries. We understand their position, and we know who to reach out to if needed. For now, we’ve decided not to pursue the matter further, respecting their decision as they are best equipped to manage their resources.
The Industry is in a Weird Place Right Now
It’s clear that the gaming industry is facing a downturn, as we see large-scale studio layoffs and even closures of major AAA studios such as Firewalk Studios from Concord.
Some experts attribute the setbacks experienced by these expensive video games, including a drop in popularity for online multiplayer and live service games. In addition, it is reported that WB Games suffered significant financial losses from “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” and it remains to be seen if “Marvel Rivals” will buck the trend of underperforming multiplayer shooter releases currently on the market.
Instead of definitively ruling out a fresh installment in the Dead Space series, they’ve left the door slightly ajar, attributing the uncertainty to the current unpredictable state of the gaming industry. As Stone put it, “People are being very cautious with their investments, so it’s best to approach this information with some skepticism.” However, he did express hope that one day we might get another Dead Space game, something that I think we all would be excited about.
As for Dead Space…
The remake of “Dead Space” received numerous positive reviews, yet it’s intriguing why Electronic Arts (EA) did not immediately pursue a sequel. It could be that the game didn’t resonate strongly with the broader gaming audience. Additionally, the tepid response to “The Callisto Protocol” might have played a role in their decision-making process.
At the moment, enthusiasts of science fiction horror can only anticipate with bated breath. Perhaps the buzz surrounding Alien: Romulus might eventually foster the germination of another Dead Space?
The Dead Space remake is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
