Van Halen produced grandiose music, with band members embodying an over-the-top spirit. Among them were David Lee Roth, the energetic lead vocalist known for his acrobatics, Sammy Hagar, the charismatic party enthusiast, Eddie Van Halen, the extraordinarily gifted guitarist, and Michael Anthony, who sometimes got overshadowed due to his relatively lower profile.
In 1974, Anthony became a member of Van Halen, where he served as the bassist during their rapid climb to stardom. Known for his common-man persona, he contrasted with Roth and the Van Halen brothers. His laid-back demeanor allowed him to weather the departures of Roth, Hagar, and even Gary Cherone, the third vocalist. He contributed to 11 of the band’s 12 studio albums before deciding to leave.
Anthony left Van Halen in 2006
Looking back on my journey, I can’t help but feel that my passion for hot sauce took a significant turn in my life decisions. In the 2000s, despite accumulating a substantial wealth during my time with the band, I chose to embark on a new adventure – creating Mad Anthony’s Sauce. This brand has thrived over the years, but it seems that this venture may have strained my relationship with Eddie and Alex Van Halen.
In an interview with New York Magazine, Anthony asserted that he thinks the Van Halen brothers held a disdain for his sauce enterprise as they felt it diminished their musical influence. He also claims they harbored similar sentiments towards Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo tequila. However, in 2006, his bond with the band came to an end. A reunion was planned, but Anthony received no invitation. Instead, Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, took up the bass role.
It’s no surprise that Anthony took offense to this situation. Particularly since the tour was marketed as a “reunited lineup,” which, in his opinion, wouldn’t truly capture the essence of Van Halen without him on bass. In other words, he believed it wasn’t the authentic Van Halen experience for him.
Anthony was inducted into the RRHOF in 2007

He expressed some frustration to Rolling Stone, stating, “I find it odd they’re labeling it as a Van Halen reunion. If they were using someone else to play my parts because I had passed away, that would be one situation, but this doesn’t feel like a reunion to me.” To add insult to injury, Van Halen left out Anthony from their final album in 2012, “A Different Kind of Truth”.
Anthony persists in his musical career, performing and touring, and is also a member of the band Chickenfoot, alongside his former bandmate from Van Halen, Sammy Hagar. The two were the only ones who attended on behalf of Van Halen when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
In the past ten years, Anthony has reconciled with the Van Halen family. Although Eddie has sadly passed away, the bassist shared with Blabbermouth that he maintains a good relationship with Wolfgang Van Halen and understands his father’s desire to tour with him. As he put it, “Wolf is an excellent person, an exceptional musician, and his band rocks!
