Love or loathe him, 1923‘s most wicked character, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), is making Season 2 of the Yellowstone spin-off a must-see event. Much has been written about the slimy character’s sadistic abuse and repulsive sexual proclivities, and whether he takes them too far. But without him, the Yellowstone Origin Story would be robbed of its most terrifying villain, and fans would be robbed of an enjoyable season of TV.
Regarding the topic of hardship, Whitfield makes his appearance in the opening episode of Season 2 and sends chills down the spines of the Dutton family members. In contrast to the first season where Whitfield was introduced to viewers in Episode 4, Season 2 surprises fans with Whitfield’s immediate presence and cruel actions. Some might argue that the addition of Whitfield has elevated Season 2 significantly.
Who is 1923’s Donald Whitfield?
Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 is a Yellowstone prequel depicting the early days of the Dutton family, led by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Dame Helen Mirren). With the swirling winds of change brought about by industrialization, the stock market crash, the Dust Bowl, prohibition, and the Great Depression, the Dutton family fights to keep their Montana ranch thriving.
In Season 1, the story shifts back and forth from Montana and Africa, where their nephew, Spencer Dutton (Brendan Sklenar), hunts wild game following WWI. Jacob contends with rival prospectors and cut-throat entrepreneurs in Montana, including the elegant yet evil Donald Whitfield, who first appears in Episode 4, “War and the Turquoise Tide.” Operating without moral scruples, Whitfield states outright in the Season 1 finale, “Nothing Left To Lose:”
“I’m a businessman. The word ‘decent’ doesn’t apply to me.”
Indecency is putting Whitfield’s wicked ways politely. The character appears twice more before the Season 1 finale, each time revealing more about his disturbing sadomasochistic abuse and bizarre sexual perversions. While an argument can be made that Sheridan pushes the character too far in his abusive behavior, way past the point of tastelessness, much less redemption, the terror he instills makes the show more suspenseful.
Donald Whitfield’s Season 2 Arc So Far
The first 20 minutes of 1923 Season 2, Episode 1, “The Killing Season,” stunned viewers with two hyper-graphic rape scenes. One includes Spencer witnessing an Italian friend, Luca (Andy Dispensa), on a tugboat heading home, while the other depicts Whitfield’s repugnant sexual sadism with a street worker. Without repeating the vile criminal acts, Whitfield’s behavior is evil enough to turn some viewers off and never return.
While that stance is understandably justified, without Whitfield, the main villain would be the far less intimidating Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and the drama would suffer on par with Whitfield’s victims. Following his odious display in “The Killing Season,” Whitfield appears in the next episode, “The Rapist is Winter,” an allusion to his pillaging ways, with plans to build a highway connecting Bozeman, Montana to larger cities and a ski resort to increase commerce.
When Whitfield isn’t physically abusing women, he’s verbally berating his business partner, Creighton, who continues to notice Whitfield’s unbridled greed. Season 2 sets up a philosophical division between the two villains, with Creighton beginning to turn on Whitfield as the season continues. In Episode 3, “Wrap Thee in Terror,” Whitfield remains on the outskirts of the drama, which sees Spencer’s friend Luca shot to death during an illegal alcohol transport.
Donald Whitfield’s Upcoming Season 2 Action
On March 16, 2025, Donald Whitfield is slated to make his mortifying presence felt in Season 2, Episode 4, “Journey the Rivers of Iron.” The episode synopsis states, “Whitfield garners support for his new business venture.” The new business venture will surely relate to his plans to promote tourism and travel, expanding on building a highway and ski resort. But with support from others, Whitfield stands to gain more power and influence in Bozeman and become a bigger thorn in Jacob and Cara’s side.
As Spencer mourns the death of Luca and desperately tries to reunite with his pregnant wife, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), his aunt and uncle will inevitably contend with Whitfield’s ruthless business plans. Although Sheridan will undoubtedly give Whitfield more disturbing moments of abuse, the character is a worthy adversary for the Dutton family. Moreover, Timothy Dalton plays the part with such evil menace, fronting an air of sophistication on the surface that buries his corrupted soul, that his performance lifts all others in the cast.
Whether Whitfield’s Season 2 exit is as strong as his entrance will be determined when 1923 Season 2 concludes on April 13, 2025. No matter, Season 2 improved on Season 1 by immediately starting with Whitfield’s relentless evil, which becomes a grand metaphor for raping and pillaging the natural land in Montana, desecrating sacred ground to enrich himself and his business partners.
