Head’s up! This discussion might contain spoilers from the initial two episodes of the second season of ‘1923’. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can stream the prequel to ‘Yellowstone’ on Paramount+ with a subscription and catch new episodes every Sunday.
In Yellowstone, wolves significantly influence the narrative of Kayce Dutton’s story. Across the main series and notably in the last two seasons, whenever the wolf appeared, it coincided with Luke Grimes’ character grappling with his decisions about upholding or forsaking the Dutton family legacy. In 1923, Elizabeth has encountered a wolf as well, leading me to wonder how such an encounter might shape Season 2 as it unfolds in the 2025 television lineup. I had the chance to discuss this with Michelle Randolph and inquire about its potential impact on the forthcoming episodes.
What Michelle Randolph Told Me About Elizabeth Facing A Wolf And A Cougar In 1923
As a devoted fan, let’s delve into the similarities between the two “Yellowstone” series, starting with what transpired with Elizabeth. In the opening episode, Michelle Randolph’s character found herself confronting a cougar. The tale took an unexpected turn in Episode 2, where she was viciously assaulted by a rabid wolf within a chicken coop. Tragically, the wolf managed to break into the Dutton residence and claimed the life of a nurse. In the end, it was Cara who put an end to the beast.
These experiences were incredibly distressing for Elizabeth, pushing her to the edge, causing her to declare she’ll depart. During our conversation, I inquired from Randolph about the importance of these occurrences, and she shared with me:
It appears as though misfortunes tend to shadow her slightly. Yet, this initial portrayal of life on the ranch, the Dutton way of living, seems almost intentional. It feels like Cara is undergoing a harsh winter education, and in the end, she’s learning that being the rancher’s wife is her destiny – a fact that’s crucial for the storyline.
1923 has undoubtedly experienced a severe winter, causing even the most malicious elements to emerge, challenging the entire family’s resilience and loyalty.
Moreover, not only does the encounter with the wolf (and the cougar) symbolize a turning point and an omen of ill fortune for Elizabeth, but it also recalls a significant battle that Kayce endured during the course of Yellowstone.
Why I Can’t Stop Thinking About These Comments In Relation To Kayce’s Relationship With Wolves On Yellowstone
Currently, I’ve often drawn parallels between Kayce and Spencer, and I still believe the youngest Dutton siblings share many similarities. Yet, it’s also important to explore how the challenges faced by the Yellowstone character regarding his role on the ranch resonate with Elizabeth’s experiences in 1923.

In this scenario, the wolf symbolizes the two options Kayce encounters throughout the series. During his vision quest at the end of Season 4 (which you can access with a Peacock subscription), he is warned that he must decide between his ranch and his family, namely Tate and Monica. This decision continues to torment him for the remainder of the show.
It appears as though the wolf incident in 1923 had a significant impact on Elizabeth, placing her at a crucial juncture where she had to decide whether to remain on the ranch permanently or leave both the ranch and Jack behind.
Similar to Kayce, she’s uncertain about her role on the ranch, which is clearly shown through her frequent discussions with Cara. The brutality she has encountered has led her to reasonably doubt her values and commitments, mirroring the Dutton who inhabits this land a century after her time.
In a symbolic sense, the wolf appears quite significant, especially this aggressive one that attacked Elizabeth shortly after she encountered a cougar. This feels ominous, a critical turning point, and a juncture in her journey. Indeed, as Michelle Randolph noted, it’s a moment worthy of remembrance as Season 2 of 1923 unfolds.
