As a die-hard gamer, I’ve got to say, even if you’re all in for Marvel or just a casual observer, everyone seems to agree that the franchise has stumbled a bit when it comes to quality lately. The initial buzz about “Captain America: Brave New World” wasn’t exactly soaring high, but here’s hoping things pick up soon. The upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+ sounds like a promising comeback, while Marvel’s Sentry in “Thunderbolts*” could potentially be the scariest villain yet. And let’s not forget about “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” a superhero squad that hasn’t exactly shined on the big screen in the past. But with Galactus as the main antagonist, there’s definitely hope for this one to turn things around.
As a dedicated gamer and comic book enthusiast, let me tell you about one formidable adversary that sends shivers down my spine – Galactus, the cosmic menace from Marvel Comics. This guy makes Thanos look like a walk in the park. His energy reserves are practically endless, fueled by devouring entire planets, and if the trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is any indication, Earth might just be next on his menu. In an alternate universe of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s the Fantastic Four who will face off against Galactus, leaving them seemingly without backup from other heroes. Yet, they may find assistance in an unexpected quarter.
Even though characters like Dazzler and Squirrel Girl have previously thwarted Galactus, it seems unlikely they will be present in “First Steps.” However, the Fantastic Four will undoubtedly be central figures in Earth’s defense against this menace. Yet, can our title heroes conquer the primary antagonist without assistance? We speculate that Marvel’s original superheroes will defeat this incarnation of Galactus with some aid from the Silver Surfer, or Shalla-Bal, as portrayed by Julia Garner, who Galactus should find particularly terrifying. Here’s why.
Who is Shalla-Bal, the female Silver Surfer?
Typically, when folks envision Silver Surfer, it’s usually Norrin Radd they have in mind. He’s the inaugural character from Marvel Comics who assumed the role of Galactus’ messenger to prevent him from devouring his home planet, Zenn-La. In this capacity, he managed to halt Galactus from destroying everything and everyone dear to him, including his beloved Shalla-Bal. The Silver Surfer’s task is to traverse the cosmos seeking planets suitable for Galactus to consume: By saving his planet, he inadvertently condemns countless others. He often represents the ongoing battle between good and evil, as he’s a reluctant harbinger of the apocalypse.
In the primary Earth-616 universe, Mephisto transports Shalla-Bal to Earth as part of a scheme to lure the Silver Surfer, following Galactus’ destruction of Zenn-La. However, after Norrin Radd imbues Shalla-Bal with some of his Cosmic Power (a formidable energy source that Galactus gives to Norrin Radd, allowing him to share it with others), she is returned to Zenn-La. It’s worth noting that the Cosmic Power can be shared by Norrin Radd with others; this concept might not factor into “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” storyline though.
In the universe known as Earth-9997, Shalla-Bal and Norrin Radd assume the roles of celestial heralds. Shalla-Bal transforms into the Silver Surfer, gaining all the abilities that come with this position. Since “First Steps” doesn’t seem to include Norrin Radd, it’s speculated that he might exist elsewhere within this universe. This opens up possibilities for Marvel Cinematic Universe stories to introduce or feature Radd (or another Silver Surfer) at a later time if they so choose.
Nobody knows Galactus like the Silver Surfer
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” we can consider Shalla-Bal as the primary messenger of Galactus, replacing the character Norrin Radd in his usual role. It’s logical to assume that Galactus might hold the Fantastic Four in the highest regard as potential adversaries, given their heroic nature and the possibility they could be the ones to ultimately defeat him in the story. Although the Fantastic Four are crucial to the plot, Shalla-Bal or Silver Surfer may prove instrumental in defeating Galactus.
The Silver Surfer frequently wrestles with the ethical implications of his divine mandate. He managed to save his own world, yet at what price? In the trilogy known as the “Galactus Trilogy,” which encompasses issues #48 to #50 of “Fantastic Four” in 1996, Silver Surfer rebels against his overlord, concluding that humanity is deserving of salvation. If “First Steps” follows a similar narrative, Shalla-Bal might arrive on Earth and share the same realization. In this comic series, the Fantastic Four block Galactus’ advance by threatening him with the Ultimate Nullifier, an ancient tool forged by the Watcher Enmu that can annihilate anything. Reed and Galactus eventually reach a standoff where both are left in a state of mutual threat, with Galactus surviving but sparing Earth.
In a possible turn of events, Shalla-Bal might experience a shift in feelings and help guide the Fantastic Four towards the location of the Ultimate Nullifier. Since this artifact is known to be on Galactus’ home world as depicted in the “Galactus Trilogy,” it makes sense that she could lead them there, given her potential access to such details. Regardless of whether the Ultimate Nullifier plays a role in “First Steps,” Shalla-Bal can offer crucial information essential for Earth’s heroes to triumph.
First Steps could take a page from Galactus the Devourer
One interesting aspect of the Multiverse and decades of comic book history is that it provides a wealth of potential storylines for films to draw upon, even though some may conflict with previous events. For example, take the six-issue miniseries “Galactus the Devourer,” written by Louise Simonson and illustrated by John Buscema. Generally, Galactus is considered an unwelcome necessity; he embodies the inevitable demise of everything in the universe and helps maintain a macabre balance. However, in this miniseries, Galactus’ hunger gets out of control, causing him to consume more planets than he should. The storyline reveals that Galactus selected Norrin Radd as the Silver Surfer precisely because he judged him noble enough to stop him when this situation arose, and that is exactly what happens in the end.
In a team-up with the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, and others, Silver Surfer helps transform Galactus into a star, halting his destructive rule. As Galactus nears death, he confides in Silver Surfer that their encounter was part of a plan to have him eliminate Galactus when necessary. Contrary to the jubilation of others, Silver Surfer feels sorrowful at Galactus’ demise, for there are even greater threats than Galactus; the extinction of a single Galactus in one universe could summon Abraxas, the personification of destruction, who aims to destroy the Multiverse.
It’s possible that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could take a similar approach, where Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four defeat Galactus in “First Steps” but then find themselves facing a new threat – the Multiverse itself in danger – in “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to release on May 1, 2026. It’s conceivable that Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom, might possess a powerful artifact called Abraxas to deal with this new crisis.
Could Silver Surfer become an even greater threat?
Silver Surfer has been an intriguing character throughout the years due to his complex nature. As Galactus’ herald, he’s destroyed numerous planets with a goal of saving his own life, making him both hero and villain. This burden of his actions often portrays him as a tragic figure as he traverses the universe on a silver surfboard. However, this doesn’t imply that he’s been forgiven for all his actions; in fact, he can be quite wicked, such as in Marvel’s “Timeslip” storyline by Jeff Smith.
In the cosmos known as Universe-97214, Galactus perishes, leaving the Silver Surfer with the heavy responsibility of understanding that the annihilation of worlds is crucial for equilibrium to prevail. The Silver Surfer assumes this task and proceeds to destroy planets, eventually losing his emotional depth and sanity in the face of the Power Cosmic. He transforms into a cold, heartless creature, demonstrating the potential danger he poses when driven by such immense power. This scenario highlights the ominous capabilities of the Surfer when pushed to extremes.
In the story “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it’s plausible that Shalla-Bal, who is portrayed as the Silver Surfer, possesses the Power Cosmic. Given that the Silver Surfer exhibits incredible power in the comic “Timeslip,” if Shalla-Bal is capable of similar feats, Galactus would rightfully be terrified of her. Similarly, this should make the Fantastic Four wary as well. They might defeat Galactus on their own, but Shalla-Bal may seek to prevent universal devastation by taking over Galactus’ role, which could lead to even greater chaos.
The need for a new herald could be Galactus’ undoing
In comic books, it’s not just Norrin Radd and Shalla-Bal who have taken on the role of Galactus’ herald. Characters like Aunt May from the Spider-Man series even filled that position in a “What If…?” storyline. Essentially, heralds serve as time-savers for Galactus by identifying potential planets he might consume and relaying the information back to him. However, not everyone is eager to perform the job as per Galactus’ wishes, as Norrin Radd illustrates.
One might conjecture that Shalla-Bal grappled with a similar dilemma in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and if she withdraws, Galactus might discover that Earth harbors numerous potential candidates for his herald. An alternative conclusion to “First Steps” could unfold should the Fantastic Four and Shalla-Bal fail to devise a means to eliminate Galactus. In such a scenario, one of them might take on the herald’s duties. For instance, Johnny Storm, portrayed by Joseph Quinn in “First Steps,” previously assumed this role in “Fantastic Four” #522, penned by Mark Waid and illustrated by Mike Wieringo. In this narrative, Johnny wielded Sue’s powers, and Galactus required his expertise in invisibility to help him discern planets that had become invisible (as a tactic employed by various alien races to evade being consumed by Galactus).
Johnny isn’t quite as somber or brooding as Norrin Radd, and instead of acting immediately, he waits for aid from the rest of the Fantastic Four. Later on, Johnny employs his Power Cosmic to restore Galactus to his original form, Galan, a being from the previous universe who now needs to consume planets in this one. The Power Cosmic, while offering vast cosmic abilities, is somewhat vague, but any Silver Surfer wielding it has immense power, even neutralizing Galactus as a danger.
The Power Cosmic lets Silver Surfer do pretty much anything
An aspect of the Silver Surfer that is frequently underestimated is his immense power within the Marvel Universe. His Power Cosmic grants him abilities that are nothing short of astonishing. He can match Thor’s strength, manipulate matter, and even strip Hulk of his gamma radiation, returning him to a weakened Bruce Banner. Time travel is also within his capabilities. While Galactus may view the Silver Surfer as an ally, it’s crucial to remember that loyalties can shift unexpectedly.
In essence, the depiction of Shalla-Bal’s Silver Surfer in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” might seem too powerful. It could be disappointing if she resorts to time travel to aid the Fantastic Four in defeating Galactus, as time travel has become a common trope in superhero movies. However, there’s no questioning that Shalla-Bal will prove a valuable ally, bringing a unique element to the team: while they have a stretchy member, an invisible one, a rock-formed one, and a self-igniting one, nothing quite compares to the Silver Surfer.
The essential point is that the character known as the Surfer can transfer the Power Cosmic to others, an ability demonstrated by Norrin Radd when he granted it to Shalla-Bal. This enabled her to rejuvenate their home planet Zenn-La. In the storyline “First Steps”, there’s a possibility that Shalla-Bal could pass on this cosmic power to the Fantastic Four, potentially boosting their abilities. To put it simply, any feats Norrin Radd has performed in the comics are open for Shalla-Bal to replicate.
The MCU’s Silver Surfer is being kept on the down-low
As a gamer, I was thoroughly gripped by the “Fantastic Four: First Steps” trailer, where the intimidating figure of Galactus cast a long shadow over the Statue of Liberty. At the 2024 D23 event, attendees had the privilege of catching a glimpse of this cosmic menace peering eerily into windows. Interestingly, Julia Garner’s Shalla-Bal was absent from the trailer. One possible reason for her absence could be the intricate visual effects required to bring Silver Surfer to life, which might not be ready for display yet. Alternatively, it could be that Marvel is strategically keeping a low profile regarding Shalla-Bal and her potential role in defeating Galactus, as she may play a crucial part in the storyline.
Garner has been tight-lipped about Shalla-Bal, not revealing much when questioned about her role in interviews. For instance, she told Who What Wear: “The Silver Surfer remains shrouded in mystery, which is crucial for me as an actress since it’s such a legendary character. It felt unique and unlike any role I’ve played before.
Instead of describing Silver Surfer as “mysterious,” we might say that her portrayal in the film could surprise audiences if she’s not just a simple minion to Galactus, but rather a character with depth and weight who initially appears malicious but later realizes the need to oppose Galactus before it’s too late. Despite her past roles as antagonists in “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna,” her performance here could challenge expectations by offering a complex portrayal of a character who begins as a villain and eventually becomes a hero.
Molecule Man and Uatu could also be surprise allies
In the comic series “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” we’ve explored multiple scenarios where Silver Surfer could pose a significant danger to Galactus. While the traditional Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd, has set most of these precedents, it’s not impossible for Shalla-Bal to possess similar abilities and narratives. Given that she will feature in the upcoming movie, Shalla-Bal is particularly threatening to Galactus.
As a fun thought experiment, there might be unexpected characters joining the “First Steps” lineup who could challenge Galactus as well.
Secret Wars” and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom are upcoming projects, it could be hinting at the inclusion of Molecule Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe very soon.
As a gamer, I’m super hyped about Uatu the Watcher, played by Jeffrey Wright, making his live-action debut! His animated appearances have been cool, but seeing an actor of Wright’s talent bring him to life on the big screen is going to be fantastic. In the comics, Uatu directs Johnny Storm to get the Ultimate Nullifier to battle Galactus. So, I can only imagine the action-packed roles he might play in “First Steps.” With cosmic beings involved, you never know what mind-blowing and awesome events could transpire!
Could Franklin Richards save the day?
One intriguing fan speculation about “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is that Sue Storm (played by Vanessa Kirby) might be pregnant throughout the movie, a possibility hinted at in the trailer by her peculiar gait and movements suggestive of carrying a child. Additionally, there’s a scene where her powers seem to fluctuate while Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) comforts her, which could imply labor or childbirth. If it turns out that Sue is giving birth, it would likely be to Franklin Richards, who holds significant power in the Marvel universe and has been known to overpower Galactus on more than one occasion.
In a surprising twist, you might assume that a newborn baby like Franklin wouldn’t stand a chance against the Cosmic Devourer, but as the story unfolds in “Fantastic Four” #604 by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting, and later in “Fantastic Four: Life Story” #5 by Mark Russell, Sean Izaakse, and Carlos Magno, Franklin isn’t just an ordinary baby. In the former comic, he journeys from the future to aid his parents against the Mad Celestials. Remarkably, this version of Franklin has transformed Galactus into his ally and commands him to fight the Celestials. In the latter storyline, Franklin employs a powerful psionic headband, with Reed Richards’ cosmic connection, to effectively disable Galactus by frying his brain.
If Franklin Richards appears in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” he might serve as the solution the team is looking for. This is under the condition that Galactus can be defeated in some way during “First Steps.” The Fantastic Four might suffer a defeat, which could lead them to search for a new home and eventually join the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting the stage for their epic battles in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
