It’s hard to believe that Blade has made three appearances in the MCU prior to Mahershala Ali’s live-action debut. The Marvel Studios’ Blade, initially confirmed as early as 2019, has been plagued with challenges and numerous setbacks since then. Despite being a seemingly straightforward project about the Marvel Universe’s vampire-slaying daywalker, it appears that bringing this character to life isn’t as simple as it seems.
As a movie critic, I must say that while I eagerly await Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Blade” film, starring the incredibly talented Mahershala Ali in the title role, it seems we’re still waiting for an official release date. However, Blade has been making appearances before his solo movie, both on the small screen and within the vast Marvel multiverse.
Here’s a rundown of where Blade has appeared so far, where you can expect to see him next, and my educated predictions as to when we’ll finally see Mahershala Ali bring the MCU’s Blade to life on the big screen.
Blade Has Appeared 3 Times In The MCU Now, Without Mahershala Ali Getting To Appear On-Screen As The Iconic Marvel Character
Eternals, Deadpool & Wolverine, What If…?
For the first time in Marvel Studios films, Blade was introduced in the closing scene of “Eternals”. In this final sequence, Kit Harrington’s character, Dane Whitman, opens a box bearing his family’s emblem, which contains the Ebony Blade – a powerful yet corrupting weapon that The Black Knight wields in the comics. Mahershala Ali’s voice as Blade can be heard asking Dane if he’s prepared to handle the sword, making this scene Blade’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though only his voice is audible at this point.
Instead of Eternals, Wesley Snipes’ original live-action Blade made an appearance in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. In this multiverse storyline, he was a refugee trapped in The Void alongside Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and Dafne Keen’s X-23. During their escapade, Snipes’ Blade humorously stated, “There’s only been one Blade. There’s only ever gonna be one Blade.” As it turns out, this statement might become a reality. Lastly, a multiverse version of Blade as Moon Knight was introduced at the end of What If…? season 3.
Blade Is Set To Appear In Another Marvel Project In 2025
Marvel Zombies
It’s interesting to mention that the appearance of the Blade/Moon Knight variant at the end of What If…? season 3 hinted at a future MCU project due out by the end of 2025. Coming up in October is the release of the Marvel Zombies miniseries, where we find surviving Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes battling for survival in a reality first introduced in What If…? season 1. We now know that the Blade character who was selected to be the Fist of Khonshu will play a significant role in the upcoming 2025 series.
It has been confirmed that Mahershala Ali will lend his voice to the animated version of Blade in an upcoming series, making Marvel Zombies an unusual first appearance for the character on-screen. In this case, Blade appears as Moon Knight in a dystopian future. Initially, it was not Marvel’s plan to debut Blade through an animated series before his live-action movie, which was originally scheduled for release many years ago. However, circumstances have led us to this point.
I’m Glad We’ve Gotten To See Blade, But I Can’t Believe We’ve Not Seen Mahershala Ali In The Live-Action Role On-Screen Yet
When Will The Blade Movie Actually Happen?
In one perspective, having animated or substitute Blades is superior to none at all, yet it’s bewildering that Marvel Studios has been in this predicament given they announced a live-action Blade film with Mahershala Ali almost six years ago. Although some delays caused by the recent writers and actors strikes in 2023 can be rationalized, the prolonged lack of progress on this movie is hard to comprehend.
It seems quite probable that a new Blade movie won’t be released before the year 2027, considering it might clash with Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it’s plausible that Mahershala Ali could join the cast for either Secret Wars, Avengers: Doomsday, or both. So, if a solo Blade film does materialize, we might not see it until late 2027 or early 2028 – a significant wait of about 8-9 years since the initial announcement by Marvel Studios.
