As a child of the ’90s, I hold a special place in my heart for the original Jumanji. It was one of those movies that left an indelible mark on my young imagination, with Robin Williams’ larger-than-life performance and Kirsten Dunst‘s innocent charm making it a classic family film. So, when I heard that the new Jumanji films didn’t feature any of the original cast, I was a little saddened.
The classic film “Jumanji,” released in 1995, remains one of the most outstanding family movies ever made. Starring a youthful Kirsten Dunst, Bonnie Hunt, and the late Robin Williams, this movie features an extraordinary board game that left audiences astounded (and some of Williams’ memorable lines from his film career). The novel-turned-movie left an indelible mark on Hollywood, but when it reappeared in 2017, none of the original cast was part of it. There’s a more intricate explanation as to why the primary original actors haven’t made a comeback yet.
As a devoted admirer, I’m excited to share insights from an engaging conversation between me, Jake Kasdan, the visionary director behind the contemporary Jumanji franchise, and The Hollywood Reporter. He opened up about his upcoming holiday action flick, “Red One,” starring none other than Dwayne Johnson, as well as the thrilling universe of “Jumanji.
Our affection for Kirsten runs deep; she’s simply remarkable! Since our collaboration on Welcome to the Jungle, we’ve been committed to maintaining a link to the original film that holds a special place in our hearts. We’ve always aimed to pay tribute and preserve its essence. Additionally, the way the original movie concludes, despite being masterful, presents challenges when attempting to carry on the narrative with those characters. If you recall, the world returns to its pre-event state, as if nothing extraordinary had occurred. Characters like Dunst’s Judy have no memory of the adventure because it bypasses that part, but Robin [Williams] and Bonnie’s characters retain their awareness.
As a die-hard fan of the original Jumanji, it’s always puzzled me why my favorite cast members didn’t make an appearance in the new films. But recently, I learned from the director of Bad Teacher that they’ve been mindful of continuity when bringing back the franchise. They even sneaked in a brief cameo by one of the original gang!
In light of the intricate complexities in the original’s finale, the director of “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” is determined to seamlessly blend the narratives. He revealed that Bebe Neuwirth’s character, Aunt Nora, appeared as a cameo in “The Next Level”. It’s reassuring to know that Kasdan and his team are staying faithful to the story’s origins. He mentioned these intentional inclusions as evidence of their commitment.
In a nutshell, the ending of their narrative presents an intricate puzzle that makes it challenging to carry on their tale. Yet, we’ve enjoyed wrestling with finding a creative and faithful solution. For instance, in “Welcome to the Jungle,” there are hints about Robin’s character, while “The Next Level” introduces Judy’s aunt Nora (played by Bebe Neuwirth), who reappears, adhering to the original storyline but with a twist.
Looking forward to the upcoming fourth film, given that Kasdan is fully committed to drawing inspiration from the 1995 movie and carefully crafting a continuation of the world. I’d love to see familiar characters reappear in the new series, perhaps Mia Farrow as Alice Khyber or Embeth Davidtz as Kathryn Dunst, but even Hunter Van Pelt, the eccentric big game hunter portrayed by Jonathan Hyde, would be a welcome sight. I’m confident that any references made will be handled with sensitivity and care.
The fourth installment of “Jumanji” is scheduled for release on December 11, 2026. Although specific details about the plot are scarce, we can make some educated guesses based on past events. I’m relieved to finally have a definitive answer regarding why certain actors who launched the series haven’t been seen lately. If the franchise continues beyond four movies, I hope Kasdan will find a more straightforward way to blend both worlds together.
