In an interview, the showrunner of Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, has discussed the absence of Hilary Swank’s character in the series finale. Swank portrayed Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid, the fourth film in the Karate Kid series and Pat Morita’s final appearance as Mr. Miyagi. The movie didn’t receive positive reviews, effectively shelving the franchise until its 2010 reboot. Despite managing to resurrect nearly every character, even those portrayed by deceased actors, Swank was one of the significant legacy characters missing from the series. Now, we have an explanation for her absence.
The TV series spin-off from the Karate Kid movies, titled Cobra Kai, wrapped up its six-season run recently. It was a humorous and nostalgic show that built upon the influential ’80s phenomenon that inspired countless people to learn karate. By using elements like music cues, references, and Easter eggs, it created a highly popular addition to the martial arts franchise. Plus, Cobra Kai’s use of cameos was unprecedented in its range and ambition.
Apart from one notable exception, every cameo in the series was as expected, but the appearance of Swank’s character was strangely missing throughout. As the final episodes unfolded, fans clung to hope that the creators would somehow bring back Swank’s character, even for a brief moment. However, when the credits rolled and it became clear that this wasn’t going to happen, a wave of questions ensued among viewers.
A few days back, Hurwitz shared that they couldn’t make Swank’s appearance happen due to finding no natural way to incorporate her character without it feeling contrived. However, the showrunner recently provided additional insights about Julie’s cameo on X. It appears that the Academy Award winner declined the opportunity to reprise her role as Julie, Miyagi’s last known student.
Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t make Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce appear in Cobra Kai’s last episodes. We attempted to discuss it with her representatives on multiple occasions, but unfortunately, we were unable to speak with her personally. In the end, she decided not to participate at this moment. We understand and continue to admire her as fans. I believe that some things are meant to occur or not, and maybe one day she’ll rejoin the Miyagiverse.” #CobraKai
‘Cobra Kai’s End Is Not the End of the ‘Karate Kid’ Franchise
In his recent comment concerning Swank’s absence in “Cobra Kai”, Hurwitz intentionally left open possibilities for the future. Next spring, fans can look forward to returning to the franchise with the debut of the upcoming film, “Karate Kid: Legends”. This movie unfolds years after the series’ events and focuses solely on Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han, who is the “new” Miyagi from the 2010 reboot karate instructor. Additionally, the creators of “Cobra Kai” have hinted at a spin-off in production, which will center around the characters Hawk and Demetri.
While certain original characters might make appearances in the film or sequel, it may prove challenging to incorporate Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce into either narrative. Yet, who would have thought that both Elizabeth Shue’s Ali Mills and Thomas Ian Griffith’s Terry Silver would resurface in Cobra Kai? The writers found a solution, demonstrating that anything is possible in the end. Keeping hope alive!
