It’s revealed that in Alfonso Cuarón’s AppleTV+ thriller, the pets or animal companions of Blanchett’s and Sacha Baron Cohen’s characters play crucial roles in the show’s complex symbolism. Following a screening of the first three episodes at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday, the cast – consisting of Blanchett, Baron Cohen, Kevin Kline, Louis Partridge, Leila George, and HoYeon Jung – held a Q&A session with the audience.
In the world of gaming, I found myself immersed in a seven-chapter journey, starring the renowned artist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) and her affluent spouse Robert (Baron Cohen). Our lives took an unexpected turn when a book titled “The Perfect Stranger” mysteriously arrived at my doorstep, revealing a secret I had thought was forever hidden. Amidst the chaos, our household was also grappling with our aimless son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The widowed author who penned the book (Kline), fueled by anger over the demise of his own child Jonathan (Partridge), relished in the satisfaction of stirring up a storm in my tranquil life.
The cat from the Ravenscroft household, a secondary character, often steals the limelight in various scenes at the refined London home of the main couple in Disclaimer. In a pivotal moment, as Blanchett’s character is meticulously deboning sole, she grapples with the mischievous cat who seems determined to add an extra challenge to her tasks.
Initially, it may appear insignificant, but Cuarón deliberately included the cat, and Blanchett eventually realized its pivotal role in the production.
As I pondered, “What’s that feline doing here?”, it suddenly dawned on me. It was during the scene where I was learning to de-bone a fish – yes, you heard it right, I had to learn that for this shoot! My family certainly enjoyed their fair share of fish during production. But then, just as I mastered the art of de-boning, after several takes, Cuaron said, “Let’s add a cat.
When she suggested bringing an animal into the conversation,” she addressed her superior, “what you were implying was that it’s unpredictable. There seems to be a dark undertone in your yearning… It appears we strive for control over our lives, but the truth is, we are so incredibly powerless. And right now, the world is filled with individuals grappling with this same lack of control. Introduce an animal into highly structured settings, and chaos ensues consistently.
I found it intriguing how subtly they kept an eye on those individuals amidst the ongoing turmoil.
Cuarón playfully remarked, “It was astonishing to watch Cate struggle. Removing the cat, preparing meals, yet always staying true to her character and delivering her performance flawlessly. To me, it was an absolute joy.
He went on to explain: “I must admit, Cate had control over the cat. The cat followed her commands as if trained to do so. This upset the animal trainer greatly because he had spent three years training this cat to move from one point to another, only for it to now act freely.” Blanchett then added that she is a loving pet owner, sharing that she has two cats, four dogs, and six chickens at home.
Once again, Cuaron and Blanchett couldn’t help but express their admiration for each other’s talent. Cuaron stated, “Cate’s role as an executive wasn’t merely a formality; it was deeply significant. She was involved in every casting decision and every crucial moment.
The cast showered praise upon the director of both Roma and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. “Usually, you must take a risk when collaborating with others,” Partridge remarked. “Indeed, [his] endorsement and observing your attention to detail in every aspect… It’s an uncommon privilege that isn’t always available on every project.
