Why Lilo & Stitch’s Live-Action Remake Could Be Disney’s Best Yet

Let’s discuss the recent live-action adaptations by Disney, as I’ve started feeling a bit overwhelmed by their number lately.

It’s clear that these movies are raking in an enormous sum of money. For instance, “Mufasa: The Lion King” has been doing exceptionally well at the box office since early January 2025, demonstrating their popularity. However, I can’t help but feel uneasy about these live-action remakes. They seem to grate on my nerves somehow.

Not only do I recognize that I’m not the only one feeling this way, but it seems many others have expressed similar thoughts about these productions being more like money-making schemes than heartfelt endeavors. Initially, I shared enthusiasm for sharing these tales with a new audience, however, as the quality of the films deteriorated, my enthusiasm waned.

I’m quite optimistic about Lilo & Stitch, to be honest, and that optimism was reinforced by the initial trailer. In fact, it has me rather excited for a number of upcoming Disney live-action films, as it seems we might finally be heading in the right direction. Here are some reasons why I believe it will turn out well.

Every Live-Action Disney Remake Feels Lifeless And Unnecessary, But Stitch Looks Like He Has Life From The Teaser

Previously mentioned, many Disney live-action adaptations often lack the vitality they had in their original forms. However, this doesn’t mean that computer-generated imagery (CGI) can’t produce powerful emotional scenes – just consider Pixar’s Inside Out as an example.

Essentially, the main challenge stems from the lifeless and emotionless portrayal of hyper-realistic CGI creatures, particularly animals, in animation. This issue becomes evident when attempting to compare these realistic CGI characters with their 2D counterparts, as the comparison often falls short. One major complaint about The Lion King was that the animals lacked life and emotion in numerous aspects.

Despite my anticipation for the upcoming “Snow White” movie, a common complaint so far is that the dwarves appear… unusual. To be honest, this peculiarity is hard to ignore. Now, though they are not animals, this strangeness proves to be quite distracting.

In the preview for the upcoming live-action version of Lilo & Stitch, I must admit that I’m quite fond of how Stitch appears. It’s not always easy to bring 2D characters to life in live-action form, but from what I’ve glimpsed so far, he seems well done – even the blue fur looks great.

Admittedly, it might simply be due to the fact that he’s an extraterrestrial being, allowing for much more imaginative possibilities; however, this point remains intriguing nonetheless.

The Original Voice Of Stitch Is Going To Be Back

Another delightful aspect of this production is that the authentic voice of Stitch will be featured in Lilo & Stitch. In contrast to numerous remakes, they frequently recruit well-known actors for character roles, while a significant number of the original voice artists are still available and ready to reprise their parts.

Indeed, it’s worth noting that Chris Sanders, known for his long-standing role as the voice of Stitch across numerous platforms, will return. This is truly significant and a testament to his exceptional talent.

In a variety of projects beyond Disney, Sanders has made his mark, from directing the animated film I adore, “The Wild Robot” (a top pick for 2024), to collaborating on “How to Train Your Dragon.” Remarkably, he also co-directed the original “Lilo & Stitch,” but this time, it’s Dean Fleischer Camp who steps into the spotlight.

Even so, it’s lovely to see the original voice actor for Stitch back for the live-action.

Not Only That, But Some Voice Actors from The Original Film And Series Will Also Be A Part Of It

It also became clear to me that some voice-actors from the original movie and series are returning for live-action roles in the upcoming film. For instance, Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani (the older sister) in the first film, has been cast as Mrs. Kekoa in the new movie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

As per the THR report, it’s been revealed that Amy Hill, known for her role as Mrs. Hasagawa in the Lilo & Stitch TV series, is set to make an appearance in the upcoming film as well.

It’s truly impressive how they’ve chosen to include the original voice actors in this movie and ensure they have significant roles. It seems less like a casual reference to the past and more like a heartfelt homage.

The Amount Of Love Poured Into The Casting And Story Shows, As Well

What really gets me pumped about the new Lilo & Stitch film is that it seems like an incredible amount of emotional depth has gone into developing both the cast and the plot. From the script written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, a Hawaiian screenwriter, to the genuine casting choices, to everyone else involved, this movie simply radiates potential for greatness.

It’s amusing, as I’m an advocate for unique concepts, and I strongly feel that cinemas should showcase more original films. However, if a live-action adaptation is of high quality, it’s definitely worth watching. Frankly, I believe Lilo & Stitch could qualify among the best.

Of course, there’s a good chunk of time left before it hits the big screen in 2025. My thoughts might shift, but for now, I’m really looking forward to discovering what this upcoming remake will bring to us.
