Ever since 2003, I’ve been hooked on “NCIS”, a series that’s taken me on an action-packed journey spanning over two decades through its numerous seasons. Despite the changing cast, one constant has been Leroy Jethro Gibbs, portrayed by Mark Harmon. He’s been the pillar of this long-running drama, having joined the show since its inception and only officially retiring from the force at the end of Season 19. As the team’s leading supervisor, Gibbs is a figure of authority, keeping everyone on track while guiding us through complex cases and challenges. Unlike some members of the team who are more vocal, Gibbs prefers to let his actions speak louder than words, carefully observing those around him rather than engaging in unnecessary chatter.
In the course of Gibbs’ tenure on the show, we gain deeper insights into his personal background, such as the factors that led him to pursue a career as a special agent. Currently, enthusiasts of this character can travel back in time with “NCIS: Origins,” a spin-off series, to witness the commencement of his storyline. Set just after the tragic deaths of Gibbs’ wife and child, this prequel finds him embarking on his career with the NCIS, known then as the Naval Investigative Service.
In the primary series of NCIS, Harmon’s son, Sean, portrays a younger Gibbs over seven episodes. However, he didn’t assume the role in the prequel series. Instead, Austin Stowell – who might remind you of other roles he’s played – is now playing the younger Gibbs. If you’re wondering why Sean isn’t reprising his role in “NCIS: Origins,” it’s because Mark Harmon’s son doesn’t play young Gibbs there.
Sean Harmon is an executive producer on NCIS: Origins
Seven times on the primary “NCIS” series, Sean Harmon, son of Mark Harmon, embodied a younger version of his father’s character. Yet, he did not reprise this role for “NCIS: Origins.” Nevertheless, it doesn’t imply that he’s any less engaged with the spin-off show than Mark is.
During an interview with Variety, Mark Harmon explained why his son chose not to reprise his character for the spin-off’s lead role. He stated, “People must choose their paths in life based on what they value or desire. I believe he made a choice and had to make decisions about it.” It seems that he prefers working behind the scenes as an executive producer. Besides being an executive producer on “NCIS: Origins,” Senior Harmon also lends his voice for the series’ narration, portraying Gibbs.
Sean Harmon isn’t new to being behind the camera. Apart from his stunt double roles, he has served as a stunt coordinator on shows like “Golden Revenge” and “Breakwater,” and movies such as “Alone” and “Dumb and Dumber To.” He also had a distinct role within the NCIS universe, playing Charlie Connor in an episode of “NCIS: Los Angeles” back in 2015.
