The new release, which is currently the second highest-grossing film in the U.S., has claimed the top spot worldwide due to the massive success of its predecessors, “My Fault (Culpa Mia)” from 2023 and its sequel “Your Fault (Culpa Tuya)” from 2024. Given its Spanish roots and its release on Valentine’s Day with an illicit romance plotline reminiscent of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, one might expect it to enhance the series’ reputation with critics. However, this English-language adaptation has fallen short in that regard, as it is essentially a carbon copy of the original movie and has failed to impress the critics.
The narrative of “My Fault: London” revolves around the character of 18-year-old Noah, portrayed by Asha Banks, who moves from America to London due to her mother’s marriage to a prosperous British businessman named William. This plotline might resonate with those who watched “Culpa Mia” in 2023, as many people did – Noah eventually encounters her new stepbrother Nick (played by Matthew Broome). Initially showing no interest in him, she later discovers feelings for him, leading to a tale that spans across three books.
Under the direction of Dani Girdwood and Charlotte Fassler, the movie showcases an ensemble cast that includes Eve Macklin, Enva Lewis, Jason Flemyng, Kerim Hassan, Sam Buchanan, Amelia Kenworthy, and Harry Gilby. Some critics have compared this cast to those in several other Wattpad productions that received negative reviews, but it’s expected they will return for a sequel nonetheless.
‘My Fault: London’ Is a Guilty Pleasure For Some
London’s Fault” is derived from the initial installment of Mercedes Ron’s trilogy titled “Culpables“, which initially gained popularity as a Wattpad tale before being developed into three full-length novels. The Spanish adaptation of the story mirrored the rise of the controversial “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and despite garnering negative feedback from both critics and viewers, it achieved an impressive worldwide debut at number one on Prime Video.
2024 saw the swift debut of “Culpa Tuya,” a movie that garnered enormous streaming success but faced harsh criticism from critics. Interestingly, its audience reception wasn’t as brutal as its critical reviews, largely because the vast majority of those who took the time to review it were already invested in the franchise. As the third Spanish-language installment in the series, “Our Fault (Culpa Neustra)” is set to hit the screens later this year, and I, along with many other fans, can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
Given the widespread preference for original content, a remake or spinoff of the Italian series Culpa Mia in English was bound to occur, as few people enjoy dubbed films and even fewer are willing to read subtitles. Yet, some might argue that these elements are unnecessary to follow the storyline of Culpa Mia. However, the primary concern for many is that the new adaptation resembles what Vince Vaughn did with Psycho, a senseless, almost frame-by-frame remake, according to numerous critics. As Rotten Tomatoes user Elvis P succinctly stated, “Imagine Fast and Furious performed by school kids. 100% I don’t buy it. Total garbage.” Indeed, it seems that way.
Indeed, if “My Fault: London” turns out to be a hit, it’s likely we’ll receive not just the third film of the original series, but possibly two more British spin-offs within the year. And who knows, there might even be another trilogy set in Russia on the horizon! For those eager to join in the excitement, all the “Guilty Parties” are currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
