Why Nicole Kidman Was the Wrong Choice for The Perfect Couple

Why Nicole Kidman Was the Wrong Choice for The Perfect Couple

As a cinephile with over three decades of watching and analyzing movies and series under my belt, I must confess that I found myself slightly disillusioned by the casting choice for The Perfect Couple, starring the illustrious Nicole Kidman.

If you love murder mysteries, make sure to pay attention because a fresh family has moved in town and they seem to be involved in a deadly crime. Titled The Perfect Couple, this new crime mystery miniseries was directed by Susanne Bier and is adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name. Now available on Netflix, the series unfolds the tale of a wedding that turned into a police investigation after an unidentified body was discovered on the shore.

Besides a few minor flaws such as Kidman’s questionable wig that borders on awkward, “The Perfect Couple” manages to tick all the boxes of a traditional whodunnit. Not only does it keep you guessing with its red herrings and intricate theories, but it also provides moments of unexpected hilarity thanks to the eccentric behavior displayed by some characters. The actors contribute significantly to the engaging narrative flow. However, there’s a strong argument to be made that one of the leading actors in the miniseries, Nicole Kidman, might not have been the ideal casting choice, and here’s why:

In the heart of the storyline in “The Perfect Couple“, we find the affluent Winbury clan, who revel in their esteemed social standing. When the eldest son, Benji Winbury (portrayed by Billy Howle), is preparing to wed his stunning fiancée Amelia (Eve Hewson), the whole family and wedding entourage gather at the Winbury’s luxurious Nantucket oceanfront villa.

Regardless of how perfect the setup is, tragedy still finds its way through the barriers of extravagance and wealth. Just hours before the love between Benji and Amelia is celebrated, a lifeless body is discovered on the shore. The victim turns out to be Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy), the bride’s beloved best friend and maid of honor. The police can’t rule out foul play, which puts the entire wedding party in lockdown. Everyone is now considered a suspect and a mission to untangle the mystery commences.

The Connection Between Kidman’s The Perfect Couple and Big Little Lies

Nicole Kidman is undeniably well-versed in the world of entertainment, consistently delivering remarkable performances across numerous films and series. One of her most notable ventures, initially acclaimed as one of the top TV miniseries, and later renewed for another season, is the gripping mystery drama titled Big Little Lies. Starring alongside renowned talents such as Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, Kidman played a key role. The series centers around the lives of three affluent mothers in Monterey, portrayed by Witherspoon, Woodley, and Kidman’s character Celeste, as they navigate through significant changes when a gruesome murder shatters the serene facade of their picturesque town.

Although the settings of “Big Little Lies” and “The Perfect Couple” may appear similar, their storylines are unrelated. However, there is a subtle link that might only be recognized by readers of the book. To clarify, the character Amelia in “The Perfect Couple” movie shares a name with a character from the book, but due to changes made during production, this Amelia was renamed. Interestingly enough, the original character’s name in the book is Celeste, which is also the name of Nicole Kidman’s role in “Big Little Lies.” Despite this coincidence, concerns arose about potential confusion or connections between the two series.

Casting Nicole Kidman For The Perfect Couple Was the Wrong Choice

Transforming a minor character’s name in a movie or TV series based on a book might be acceptable, but overhauling one of the key characters’ names significantly alters the reading experience. The principal characters in a story become deeply ingrained in readers’ minds as they share in their struggles and aspirations. One crucial factor that forges a powerful connection between character and reader is, astonishingly enough, their names. Long after finishing a book, it’s often these main characters’ names and actions that remain etched in memory.

Regarding Amelia from the whodunnit miniseries, altering her name seemed akin to introducing an entirely fresh character. It’s not surprising that fans of the novel find themselves disconnected from Amelia given their affection for Celeste instead. There’s no denying Nicole Kidman is a formidable addition to the cast, but in this case, her presence had a somewhat negative impact on the series. Furthermore, viewers have expressed that Kidman’s portrayal of Amelia differs significantly from how Celeste was depicted in the book.

In essence, it seems that Nicole Kidman was an unsuitable fit for the character in “The Perfect Couple”. While adaptations often involve alterations, modifying the characters’ names can be a bit overstepping, particularly for devotees of the source material. A clearer approach would have been to distinguish Celeste from “Big Little Lies” and the Celeste in “The Perfect Couple”, thus avoiding any confusion.
