As a die-hard admirer of Parker Posey, I’ve always been captivated by her journey in the world of cinema. She’s recently shared some insights into the hurdles she encountered transitioning from independent films to major studio productions early on in her career.
Actress who plays the lead role in ‘The White Lotus’ recently featured on the ‘Smartless’ podcast, led by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. During this conversation, she was inquired about her feelings towards being dubbed the “indie queen” during the ’90s due to her memorable performances in films like ‘Party Girl’, ‘Flirt’, ‘Dazed and Confused’, and ‘The Daytrippers’. Interestingly, Posey confessed that this label may have restricted her from securing roles in big-studio productions.
She put it this way: ‘I felt as though I had been given a nickname,’ she said. ‘My journey resembled something like this: Greg Mottola, the director of The Daytrippers, did a reading for his film he was trying to fund, and I introduced him to Liev Schreiber who was in Party Girl. A year later, we worked on The Daytrippers together. It was such a tight-knit community at the time. When I first came into the limelight, and independent cinema became more popular, it also got taken over by the major studios, transforming it into something else. Suddenly, I found myself struggling to secure funding for a movie, and it was disorienting because I had previously led independent films that were shot in just 23 days, yet now I needed to audition for Hollywood productions.’
Reflecting on her past, Posey feels she was manipulated or misled into believing she wasn’t at the same level of prominence as other well-known Hollywood stars. Previously, Posey has expressed frustration about missing out on major roles that were eventually given to Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock, like the one in “Speed” (1994), where Bullock played Annie, because she was considered “too independent.
She said, ‘I guarantee I’ll learn these lines from the script, and we’re going to have a fantastic time, you can rely on me!’ Following that, for roughly 20 years, there was a lot of that kind of experience. Then came working with exceptional directors, participating in various films, although not always well-compensated, but it provided the opportunity to express my creativity.
Previously, Posey made a comeback in public consciousness through her impressive portrayal of Victoria Ratliff in Mike White’s series, “The White Lotus.” More recently, she garnered recognition at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards as she was honored with the Legend Tribute. During her acceptance speech, she acknowledged the show creator by expressing, “Thank you, Mike White, for crafting this role for me; for having faith in a woman of my age and in my legacy.
