Why ‘Percy Jackson 3’ Never Happened

As someone who grew up devouring every book in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, I was both thrilled and skeptical when it was announced that a Hollywood adaptation would finally be made. After years of disappointment with the first two films, I was hesitant to have my beloved characters and world brought to life on screen once more.

But, oh boy, was I ever wrong! The Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has been nothing short of a dream come true for this longtime fan. From the moment Walker Scobell’s Percy stumbled through the doors of Camp Half-Blood, I knew that we were in for something special.

The show brilliantly captures the humor, heart, and adventure that made the books so beloved to millions of readers like myself. The casting was spot on, with each actor embodying their characters perfectly. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I watched the series unfold, transporting me back to my childhood days spent devouring the novels.

The stunning visuals and world-building are truly breathtaking, making the mythology of Greek gods and monsters come alive in a way that was never possible on the big screen before. And let’s not forget about the epic battles and heart-pounding action sequences that kept me on the edge of my seat.

But what really sets this series apart is its faithfulness to the source material. Rick Riordan himself was heavily involved in the production, ensuring that every detail was accurate and true to the books. It’s rare to see such a faithful adaptation, especially in today’s Hollywood where creators often take creative liberties for the sake of ratings or box office success.

So, if you’re a fan of the Percy Jackson series, I can’t recommend “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” enough. It’s everything we could have ever hoped for and more. And as someone who has waited years to see this world brought to life on screen, I can confidently say that it was worth every moment of anticipation.

Oh, and a little joke for good measure: I guess Hollywood finally learned that when you stick to the source material, good things happen! (wink wink)

Hollywood doesn’t hesitate to transform popular books into movies, and while blockbusters like “Harry Potter,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and “The Hunger Games” have garnered immense acclaim, not every adaptation receives the same level of adoration. For instance, in 2010, the globally released film version of Rick Riordan’s best-selling children’s book, “The Lightning Thief“, introduced the demigod character Percy Jackson to the big screen with Logan Lerman portraying the title role.

As a lifelong fan of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” book series, I must say I was deeply disheartened by the movie adaptations that followed. Having grown up immersed in Percy’s adventures, I found it incredibly disappointing to see the movies stray so far from the source material. The deviations left many of us fans yearning for a more faithful adaptation, despite its box office success. Three years later, the sequel “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” was released, only to attract the same ire from both moviegoers and critics. This second film ultimately put an end to any discussion about a third film installment.

Yet, out of this disappointment came something wonderful: the creation of the acclaimed TV series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Although it’s been years since the disappointing films, I still hold onto hope that one day we’ll see a more faithful adaptation of the beloved book series on screen. For now, I’m content to enjoy the captivating stories brought to life in the TV show and cherish the memories of my childhood spent reading about Percy Jackson’s adventures.

A Hated Big Screen Adaptation of the Popular Fantasy Novels

According to Rick Riordan’s popular children’s book, the 2010 fantasy movie “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” features Logan Lerman as the title character, a troubled teenager. In this story, Percy uncovers an amazing truth – he is the son of the powerful Greek god Poseidon and has demigod abilities that he must use to prevent a devastating conflict from erupting, following the mysterious theft of Zeus’ lightning bolt. With the aid of his trusty friend Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson) and fellow demigod Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), Percy undertakes a transformative journey to preserve harmony in his world.

In “The Lightning Thief,” stars such as Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, and Steve Coogan lend their talents. This captivating tale follows Percy’s valiant attempts to avert a full-blown war among the gods, a conflict that could spill over onto Earth, leading to catastrophic upheaval. Percy’s challenges don’t end there, as he grapples with Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, who has abducted his mother (played by Catherine Keener) as a means to secure the sought-after lightning bolt in exchange.

The ‘Percy Jackson’ Films Fail to Impress Audiences

Renowned director Chris Columbus is known for masterfully guiding blockbuster movies such as “Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” Despite his extensive background, he couldn’t manage to effectively bring Riordan’s well-loved novel to life on the silver screen. Although it earned over $226.4 million during its time in theaters, neither critics nor fans of the original book series were satisfied with the final product. Many felt let down by the numerous changes from the source material and the failure to convey the enchanting essence of the novels.

Rick Riordan voiced his disapproval towards Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, even predicting that the changes made would disappoint fans of the original books. He was particularly critical of the weak script, deviations from the primary plotline, and the character aging to cater to teenagers, which left a bitter impression on both Riordan and the fans.

In a harshly worded email to the film’s producers, Riordan expressed his dissatisfaction with these creative choices.

If the current script for the movie adaptation moves forward, it’s virtually guaranteed that readers of the original books will feel frustrated and disillusioned. They’ll leave the theater en masse and spread negative reviews. However, an even bigger issue is that, regardless of whether or not you consider the book, this script fails to stand on its own as a compelling story.

Despite receiving negative feedback from fans of the fantasy series, the financial success of “The Lightning Thief” at the box office eventually led to a sequel being produced. This was “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” which premiered on August 7, 2013. Similar to its predecessor, the sequel also saw success financially, earning $200.9 million. However, it was similarly criticized for its complex plot, dull characters, and creative decisions made by the studio and director Thor Freudenthal in creating the sequel. The movie garnered a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 42%, which, in part, contributed to the cancellation of the third installment.

Third Installment Scrapped in Favor of TV Series

Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the rights to the Percy Jackson novels shifted to Disney. In September 2019, Rick Riordan presented a fresh adaptation concept to Disney, which led to the series being officially approved in January 2022. Remarkably, Riordan and his wife Becky have been actively involved in the production process. Each season of this Disney+ original will correspond to one novel installment. Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries were cast as Percy, Grover, and Annabeth, respectively, for the lead roles.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians graced our screens on December 19, 2023, earning rave reviews and joyful acclaim from audiences everywhere. Fans were thrilled that this Hollywood rendition successfully brought Riordan’s writing to life on screen, praising its remarkable cast performances, breathtaking visuals, and captivating world-creation. In just six days, a staggering 13.3 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, with that number soaring to 110 million hours streamed by the seventh week. The series also boasted an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, contributing to its swift renewal for a second season by the streaming giant.
