Taylor Sheridan’s series started with a strong impact and has become one of the top crime dramas currently airing. Since its debut on Paramount+ in 2022, it ranks as the fourth most-watched series created by Sheridan, attracting more viewers than even “Game of Thrones” at its premiere. The audience is captivated by the underlying tension in the life of ruthless mafia boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi, portrayed by Sylvester Stallone. This illegal drama lies at the core of any great crime series, and it’s made even more compelling by the intense intrigue surrounding Manfredi’s quest to establish a criminal empire in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate that a gripping crime series like ours thrives not just on its lead character, Manfredi, but also on a veritable gang of eccentric figures. For instance, consider Tyson Mitchell (Jay Will), our sharp-minded driver whose academic background offers a fascinating contrast to Manfredi’s unconventional ways. And let’s not forget Cal Thresher (Neal McDonough), the corrupt entrepreneur with a drug dealing side hustle. However, some keen-eyed viewers have been left scratching their heads since the second season, wondering where Caolan Waltrip (Ritchie Coster) has disappeared to. Last we saw him in “Happy Trails,” but ever since then, he’s been nowhere to be found. So, what became of this intriguing Oklahoma outlaw?
Who Is Caolan Waltrip?
- Amazingly, it took Sheridan only one week to write the show’s pilot.
- Showrunner Terence Winter moved the show to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- The show was originally titled Kansas King, as revealed by reports from 2021.
Without a doubt, the explanation for Caolan Waltrip’s disappearance from “Happy Trails” is logical. By the finale, it’s clear that Caolan has met his unfortunate demise. His confrontation with the Black Macadam gang and the mafia, predictably, ends disastrously. Just as Stallone consistently portrays, by the end of the violent skirmish, Manfredi pins Caolan against a wall and shoots him, effectively killing him.
In theory, he might return. It’s within the realm of possibility that the writers could find value in keeping Caolan alive. Such a scenario isn’t far-fetched, given past events in crime shows and even comedies where characters are brought back to life through plot twists or retcons.
As a movie buff, I’d like to point out that Caolan is not just defined by his demise. In numerous aspects, this gangster serves as a contrast to Stallone’s character. Caolan, in many ways, embodies a more carefree, uninhibited kingpin. Despite spending six years behind bars, his criminal inclinations remain undimmed. Upon his release, he swiftly reconnects with his biker gang and even spearheads their reckless campaign against perceived adversaries.
In the series “Caprice,” we’re introduced to Caolan and his tight-knit gang of motorcycle enthusiasts. It is in this episode that they devise their ambitious scheme to dismantle the expanding Oklahoman empire of the Manfredi family. Their violent demise, though inevitable and gruesome, serves as a chilling conclusion to one of Dwight’s numerous feuds.
Why Did Ritchie Coster Leave Tulsa King?
- A spin-off set in New Orleans was announced in 2024. It is currently in development.
- Costume designer Suzanne McCabe bases many of the show’s outfits on fashion worn by the Gambino and Franzese crime families.
- Terence Winter resigned as showrunner in 2022, citing “creative differences.” He rejoined the crew as a writer in 2024.
In essence, Ritchie’s part in the series Tulsa King was initially planned to be temporary. Not every actor gets to headline a show or contribute significantly to its overall influence. While Caolan might not have been originally conceived as the main antagonist, he plays an indispensable role. He facilitates Stallone’s character’s return to the criminal underworld subtly.
From my perspective, he’s more of an introductory adversary. He holds the role as the boss of Manfredi’s training grounds, if you will. The Macadams, while they boast a formidable arsenal, are not truly fearsome. In a face-off against a well-coordinated mafia, they’d barely make a dent. Their lofty aspirations were merely a fleeting distraction on the Manfredi family’s vast horizon.
To put it another way, Coster’s outstanding acting, with the exception of a minor stumble, has significantly boosted his fame in the 55-year-old actor’s already shining career. Although he might not be the most familiar face among the cast of Tulsa King’s first season, his prominent role in the series bolsters his reputation. Caolan is one of Coster’s key characters, and his performance could pave the way for more significant roles in the future.
It’s clear that Coster’s tenure on Tulsa King was purely professional and friendly. He didn’t depart the series due to personal issues; instead, his character’s storyline simply came to an end. The Macadams might make great adversaries for a future crime syndicate, but a small biker gang could never serve as the main antagonist. From a practical standpoint, it’s impossible. Therefore, fans said goodbye to Coster with a thrilling finale in Season One.
