As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of these characters since their comic book days, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man didn’t make an appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. The thought of Tony Stark reuniting with his old friend Happy Hogan was tantalizingly close, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
The movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” is filled with appearances by Marvel characters, including some familiar faces like Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and an entertaining Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). Yet, not all iconic figures agreed to take part in the cross-universe chaos. Regrettably, Robert Downey Jr. declined the opportunity to reprise his role as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in this humorous superhero flick.
In an interview with Indiewire, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shared that they had hoped to have Robert Downey Jr. make a cameo in their script for “Deadpool & Wolverine”. However, his casting as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prevented this from happening, despite their efforts to persuade him. Behind the scenes, they were unaware of Downey’s commitment to the Doctor Doom role. They had assumed that he wouldn’t refuse a request from Ryan Reynolds, but unfortunately, he was unable to accept due to his involvement with Doctor Doom.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Iron Man’s emotional farewell scene is best left untouched. Interestingly, the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” starts off by vandalizing Logan’s grave, showing a disregard for honoring deceased superheroes. Contrasting this, Tony Stark’s return in the storyline wasn’t about disturbing a grave; instead, it was about reconnecting him with an old companion.
Robert Downey Jr. would have joined Jon Favreau in Deadpool & Wolverine
In a conversation with Happy Hogan, played by Jon Favreau, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) discusses his desire to join the Avengers. Despite Deadpool’s attempts to persuade Hogan that he would be a suitable addition to the superhero team, Hogan remains skeptical due to Deadpool’s self-serving motives. Interestingly, it is not up to individuals to decide whether they become an Avenger – instead, becoming an Avenger is a calling. This scene is amusing, but the original intention was for both Tony Stark and Happy Hogan to engage with Reynolds’ character, the sarcastic anti-hero.
Given the advantage of hindsight, they acknowledge that not casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark turned out to be a fortunate decision. As Rhett Reese stated in Indiewire, “We would have loved to have him, but considering Marvel was about to introduce him in another role soon, having him play Tony Stark wouldn’t have been the best fit when Doctor Doom was on the horizon.”
It’s easy to comprehend why Downey Jr. declined “Deadpool & Wolverine,” as the film managed to thrive without his celebrity status. Yet, Marvel enthusiasts may lament the fact that his choice prevented a potential Avengers reunion on the big screen.
Deadpool would have destroyed The Avengers
In a playful jab, Deadpool and Wolverine criticize the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly its fixation on multiverse chaos. Some fans argue that the MCU should have concluded after “Avengers: Endgame,” and Deadpool humorously acknowledges their sentiments in his recent film release. The creators initially aimed to intensify Deadpool’s crusade against Marvel by having him mock the Avengers, but the movie as it stands is still a delight for fans.
In the interview with Indiewire, Paul Wernick suggested that if Deadpool was turned down by Tony Stark and Happy Hogan in joining Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, he might have exploded in anger at Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, and Captain America. This outburst would have been full of biting comments, with jibes about Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s clean-cut vocabulary.
Regrettably, since Robert Downey Jr. declined a cameo, that specific scene featuring him and Deadpool didn’t materialize. It remains to be seen whether future events might bring these two iconic characters together in the Marvel Universe.
