Why Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Announced Her Name Change Proposal in the LA Times

As a fan and follower of the Jolie-Pitt family, I find it fascinating how Shiloh has taken the initiative to legally change her last name. It’s a significant milestone in her young adult life, marking a new chapter in her personal journey.

A lawyer spoke about why Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, placed a notice in the Los Angeles Times to make it formally known that she intends to go by just her mother’s last name.

Recently in Los Angeles, an 18-year-old girl took out an advertisement in the local paper to inform the public that she had submitted a petition to legally change her surname from Jolie-Pitt to just Jolie. This action sparked some misunderstanding, yet it’s a routine step taken to expedite the approval process for name changes.

David Glass, an attorney based in California, explained to People magazine that Shiloh’s publication of her name change petition in the Los Angeles Times was necessary, as she had to formally file this request with the court.

Glass pointed out that Shiloh is required to place an advertisement in the newspaper for four consecutive weeks and provide written notice to both parents, prior to the scheduled hearing.

Following the filing of a name change petition in California, as outlined in a court guide, an Order to Show Cause must be published in a local newspaper for a minimum of four weeks. This necessitates payment of a fee to the publishing company. Once this step is accomplished, the process of approving the new name usually progresses without complication.

I’ve always believed that name approvals rarely face opposition in court. In hypothetical situations, Brad could argue that Shiloh has been estranged from him due to her mother’s actions. However, since Shiloh is no longer a minor, she holds the power to choose and name herself as she pleases.

I’m a huge fan of the Jolie-Pitt family, and on May 27th, Shiloh turned 18 and decided to make a change to her last name. She filed papers to drop her father’s surname from hers. Interestingly enough, she’s not alone in this desire within her family. Her younger sister Vivienne, who is only 16, went by “Vivienne Jolie” when she was credited as a producer’s assistant on The Outsiders’ Playbill. And even their older sibling Zahara, who is now 19, identified herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie,” without the “Pitt,” during a video for her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, in 2023.
