Why Sonic & Shadow’s Epic Team-Up May Ruin Future Sonic Movies

With video game movies gaining more and more attention, one of the most eagerly anticipated upcoming productions is the fourth installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, titled “Sonic the Hedgehog 4.” Although this movie isn’t scheduled for release until 2027, there’s already a lot of chatter about it. The Sonic films have been steadily gaining traction since the debut of the first film in 2020, and each subsequent film has garnered better reviews than its predecessor. However, the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sets up an intriguing challenge for Sonic 4 to surpass it further.

The movie concluded with Sonic and Shadow engaging in their epic showdown, during which they each harnessed the energy of the chaos emeralds and clashed across various global locales, eventually colliding into a moon destined for destruction. In the aftermath, they came to understand their shared traits and resolved their conflicts, pushing their superhuman abilities to the limit to thwart Dr. Gerald Robotnik. This climactic scene was undeniably spectacular and reminiscent of the video games, yet it presents a challenge for Sonic 4 moving forward.

Super Sonic & Super Shadow Teaming Up Again In Sonic 4 Will Inherently Be Less Exciting

It’s Already Been Done Before

Experiencing Super Sonic and Super Shadow together in Sonic 3 was truly thrilling, but any future attempts to recreate that scenario may lose some of their excitement due to familiarity – it’s been done before. As for the progression of the finales in the first three movies: The first movie showcases Sonic taking down Robotnik solo; he transforms into Super Sonic in the second film, and the third movie amped things up by introducing Super Shadow to the fray. Rehashing this formula could lead to a sense of diminishing returns.

Sonic 4 Will Have To Get Creative To Make Super Sonic & Super Shadow’s Next Team-Up Feel Bigger

There Needs To Be Some Escalation To Make It Work

Instead of merely watching Super Sonic and Super Shadow battle robots once more, which might not be overly thrilling, there are several ways to make their next joint appearance feel as significant as in Sonic 3. Adding more Super characters is a straightforward solution, but it may also result in less impactful results due to potential diminishing returns. Introducing Super Knuckles, Super Tails, and Super Amy alongside Sonic and Shadow would be enjoyable, but it could still seem repetitive.

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself yearning for an exhilarating twist: Unveiling formidable antagonists that can challenge our beloved Super heroes. The duel between Sonic and Shadow was electrifying, yet it seemed the climax was truncated when they faced off against a few robots and the need to transport the Eclipse Cannon. Introducing a new, robust Sonic nemesis capable of holding their own would be intriguing, but crafting a battle that surpasses Sonic and Shadow’s encounter seems like an uphill task.

It May Be Better For Sonic 4 To Skip A Super Sonic & Super Shadow Team-Up

Save It For Another Movie Later Down The Line

In light of these ongoing issues, it could be advantageous for the franchise to momentarily abandon these Super forms in the stories. Instead of continually resorting to battles that revolve around characters acquiring Super forms as a means to save the day, perhaps a less apocalyptic, world-ending conflict for Sonic 4 would offer a refreshing change. This could help restore the franchise’s balance and rekindle the excitement reminiscent of Sonic 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Worldwide Box Office
Sonic the Hedgehog $319.7 million
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 $405.4 million
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 $492.1 million

It seems like a fantastic idea to have Super Sonic and Super Shadow join forces again, but perhaps it would be wiser to save that for Sonic the Hedgehog 5. The Sonic franchise will carry on as long as audiences keep engaging with it. With Sonic 4 introducing characters like Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, it’s beneficial to keep the story centered around them at this point. A major, world-ending crisis that requires Super Sonic and Super Shadow could be saved for a later installment after Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has restored some semblance of normality to the series.
