Why Sony Should Have Made a PlayStation 2 Classic Mini Console

During the peak of mini console craze, everyone recalls Sony’s mishandling of the PlayStation Classic. With Nintendo launching their NES and SNES Classic Editions, the PlayStation Classic was supposed to be a surefire hit. Unfortunately, they didn’t choose a strong game library, and it’s regrettable that we missed out on an incredible PlayStation 2 Mini Classic.

Given the chance, Sony might have produced a PlayStation 2 Classic Mini to compensate for the original, considering it’s unlikely we can get one now. The PS2 boasts an impressive library of games that surpasses the PS1 in quality and quantity. A miniature console loaded with these fantastic games would undoubtedly bring joy to many gamers.

It’s challenging to identify a universal library for a PS2 Classic, given the vast array of games available on these early PlayStation consoles. Each owner might have different favorite titles due to the variety, which could explain Sony’s difficulties with their PS1 Classic and the lackluster performance of that mini console in the market.

Given the extensive library of IP Sony holds, it seems fitting that the PlayStation 2 Classic Mini might have been enriched with some legendary games. For instance, platformers such as Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper could have found a suitable home here. Role-playing games like Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest 8 would also fit nicely within this collection. Even fighting games like Tekken 5 and Soulcalibur 2, which both feature Heihachi, wouldn’t appear out of place on the system.

Choosing which console library to populate next time will be challenging due to the vast array of fan favorites from this generation. Some enthusiasts might advocate for Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, while others might push for the entire Xenosaga trilogy. Not to mention the anime fighters like Naruto Ultimate Ninja and Dragon Ball Z Budokai that continue to have a dedicated following.

Despite the success of the PlayStation Classic, it’s questionable if a PlayStation 2 Mini Classic would have been approved. The trend for miniature consoles peaked significantly with the emergence of systems like the Nintendo Switch. Although SEGA produced some remarkable mini consoles, their hesitation to produce a Dreamcast or Saturn mini suggests that their time had passed.

Most fans today might express a preference for alternatives over a PlayStation 2 Classic Mini. With options like PC handhelds and Anbernic devices available for emulating PS2 games effectively, or Sony rereleasing some games on the PS4 and PS5, it could be argued that these platforms offer a superior approach to preserving classic games compared to Nintendo.

However, we continue to gaze at the stars, pondering about what might have transpired, indeed, it would be delightful to re-experience the iconic PS2 opening once more on a more compact device.
