Why The DC Universe’s Return of a Dead Villain Will Shock Fans

As the promotions intensify for season 2 of “Peacemaker”, it appears that the popular series is planning to reintroduce a significant antagonist from the days of the DCEU, and I can’t help but wonder why. Although the first DCU film, “Superman”, is set for release on July 11, “Peacemaker” is poised to follow closely as it debuts on August 21, 2025. Given the trailers, previews, and sneak peeks of both upcoming productions, I have a feeling that DC’s new cinematic universe has a promising future ahead.

The first season of “Peacemaker” was highly praised as one of the top DCEU productions, branching off from the equally admired “The Suicide Squad” to highlight a group of less well-known but entertaining DC characters. However, some fans are puzzled about the series’ renewal because the first and second seasons seem to be set in different storylines. This confusion has grown with the apparent resurrection of a character who died during season 1, but I have a theory about how “Peacemaker” season 2 will explain this return.

The DC Universe’s Reboot Is Bringing A Roster Of DCEU Characters Along With It

The Entire Peacemaker Season 1 Cast Are Returning

In simpler terms, the DC Universe represents a fresh start for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which launched with “Man of Steel” in 2013 and concluded around a decade later with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” This reboot means that main characters from the DCEU, such as Henry Cavill’s Superman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, will be replaced by new versions, starting with David Corenswet in his portrayal of Superman in a future movie. However, it’s worth noting that not every character from the DCEU has been replaced, with the entire cast of “Peacemaker” remaining unchanged.

It’s worth noting that the first season of Peacemaker leaves room for interpretation regarding what is and isn’t considered canon, but James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has stated that any past events referenced in the show will eventually become canon. Fortunately, Peacemaker doesn’t seem overly tied to other DCEU films outside of a single notable encounter between the 11th Street Kids and the Justice League at the end of season 1. This suggests that this scene may be briefly addressed or perhaps explained differently if Peacemaker season 2 chooses to delve deeper into it.

I’m So Interested To See How & Why The DC Universe Appears To Be Bringing A Villain Who Died In Peacemaker Season 1 Back Into Its Story

White Dragon Can Be Seen In A Newly Released Featurette

In their ongoing efforts to generate excitement for “Peacemaker” season 2, director James Gunn and lead actor John Cena made an appearance at CCXP Mexico, where they shared a fresh sneak peek video of the series on YouTube. This intriguing clip offers glimpses into the production process, as well as snippets from the final product. Notably, the preview hints that the White Dragon, Peacemaker’s father who was presumed dead in season 1, will be reappearing in the show. Despite a change in color scheme to blue and white, his distinctive helmet remains unmissable.

If we accept that most of the first season of “Peacemaker” is canonical, altering Auggie Smith’s fate would undoubtedly seem unexpected. Instead, it’s plausible to speculate that the White Dragon glimpsed in the Peacamker featurette hails from another universe. This theory seems popular and persuasive, as another Peacemaker teaser hints at Chris Smith encountering a different version of himself following an accidental stumble into a pocket dimension filled with helmets. The presence of such a pocket dimension implies the existence of multiple universes, and it’s possible that “Peacemaker” season 2 may explore this multiversal theme.

Peacemaker Season 2 Bringing White Dragon Back Seems Like A Fascinating Move For The Titular Hero’s Story

Is Peacemaker About To Center On The DCU’s Multiverse?

Given that Peacemaker‘s second season seems to be exploring the idea of the multiverse, I find it interesting timing. Although this could potentially provide the DCU with an effective way to explain the altered appearance of its Justice League characters by transferring them from one universe to another, it’s challenging not to notice that audiences have recently grown less enthusiastic about the concept of the multiverse. If the DCU aims for a strong beginning, this move by James Gunn might be considered risky.

Instead, I believe that in the second season of Peacemaker, the concept of the multiverse could be introduced as a subplot rather than being integral to the storyline from the start. The introduction of a White Dragon from another dimension, who might possess an entirely distinct moral compass compared to the despicable Auggie Smith from Peacemaker’s original universe, presents intriguing narrative possibilities. This becomes even more compelling when considering Peacemaker’s relationship with his father, especially if there exists a counterpart in an alternate universe who is still alive and could be Peacemaker’s brother as well.
