Why The Last Of Us’ Kaitlyn Dever Had To Be ‘Extra Secured By Security’ While Filming Season 2

As a die-hard fan of The Last of Us and a connoisseur of character performances, I am beyond excited for the upcoming second season. Kaitlyn Dever, who will be playing Abby, has garnered a lot of attention due to her role as a complex and controversial character. While some might fear the hate that comes with portraying such a character, I have full faith in Dever’s ability to handle it gracefully.

For “The Last of Us” Season 2, there’s an abundance of anticipation and a stellar cast, but unfortunately, negative reactions are often unavoidable when a show becomes popular. This was particularly evident with Kaitlyn Dever, who will portray Abby in the new season. She has reportedly received extra protection during filming due to potential backlash from fans, as Isabela Merced, her co-star, attested to her incredible resilience in handling the intense pressures of playing such a notorious character.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Josh Horowitz expressed concern about Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby in The Last of Us: Part 2, as she may face backlash due to her actions in the game. Isabela Merced, who played another character, revealed that Dever had additional security on set because of this potential negative response.

In this world, there are an alarmingly high number of individuals harboring dislike towards an imaginary character named Abby. To clarify, Abby is purely fictional. This hostile sentiment necessitated a heightened level of security for Kaitlyn during the production process to ensure her safety.

Certainly!

The actress known for playing Superman is set to portray Dina, a potential love interest for Ellie in the series. Simultaneously, it was previously mentioned that a former star from Last Man Standing will play Abby, a character who is intricate and eventually becomes an adversary. As my colleague Nick Venable stated when news about Abby’s casting emerged, “she exhibits both warmth and menace, sympathy and ruthlessness.” Thus, given the nature of this character, the actress taking on her role should anticipate a variety of responses from viewers.

In various instances, individuals have faced intense backlash for portraying unpopular characters, such as Criston Cole in “House of the Dragon,” played by Fabien Frankel. Lately, he’s been met with significant criticism and has allegedly restricted comments on his Instagram due to it. This situation suggests that Dever could encounter similar negative feedback, which is one of the reasons they provided additional security for her during filming.

Additionally, Merced elaborated on the reasons why the actress from Booksmart excels in this part, pointing out:

Kaitlyn is an amazingly composed individual who remains unaffected by most things. She’s got a clear perspective on life, and though she’s currently facing some tough personal challenges, it’s heart-wrenching to witness. However, I truly believe she deserves the Emmy. Frankly, I can’t wait for everyone to see how brilliantly Bella and Kaitlyn performed in this project.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that the actress from Alien: Romulus has recently shared some personal insights. She’s going through a tough time right now, particularly since she lost her mother back in February. Needless to say, this has been a challenging period for her as she navigates her grief. Yet, despite these difficult circumstances, she continues to shine on screen, and her performance in The Last of Us is truly remarkable.

It seems that she might not be quite ready for the role of Abby, but I’m eager to witness her portrayal! Let’s hope viewers are understanding and appreciative of her efforts, as it’s important to remember that actors don’t embody the characters they play off-screen. Instead, her performance as a villain will serve as another significant addition to an already impressive acting career. Fortunately, it appears that the team behind The Last of Us is backing Dever, offering support and ensuring her wellbeing throughout this experience.

Look forward to watching Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal, among others, as Season 2 of “The Last of Us” debuts in 2025. Until then, catch up on Season 1 with a Max subscription and keep an eye on the 2024 TV schedule to see what’s currently playing on your screens.
