Why The Next Star Wars Trilogy Has Us Seriously Worried

As a lifelong “Star Wars” fan with memories of the original trilogy etched into my very soul, I must admit that the announcement of Simon Kinberg’s new trilogy has left me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, Kinberg’s impressive resume, particularly his work on “Star Wars Rebels” and “X-Men,” promises a level of quality and dedication to the franchise that I can’t help but appreciate.

Currently, the situation seems somewhat official: Simon Kinberg has agreed with Lucasfilm to create a fresh trilogy of “Star Wars” movies. However, one can’t help but feel apprehensive about whether this will actually come to fruition. Let’s discuss a few points that have us concerned.

Initially, let me clarify the content of these upcoming films. Initially suggested that they would be episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga, following on from the last three films ending with “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. However, more recent information reveals that Kinberg is actually developing a completely fresh storyline instead.

It’s tough to choose which scenario we’re more eager about. If Ridley Scott (Kinberg) continues The Skywalker Saga, there’s a high chance we’ll see more of Rey, which is enticing given her popularity following the recent film trilogy. Alternatively, a fresh storyline with an entirely new cast of characters is equally alluring. A fresh start can be quite exciting, particularly when the previous series received numerous criticisms.

Simon Kinberg is definitely well-suited for the job

You may find yourself wondering, “Who exactly is Simon Kinberg?” Though his name might not instantly ring a bell, you’ve likely encountered his work in various projects. In the realm of “Star Wars,” he collaborated on creating the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” from 2014 to 2018 and served as a consultant for “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.” Within the Marvel universe, Kinberg has been deeply involved in the production of multiple “X-Men” films. Most recently, he took on an executive producer role for the blockbuster hit “Deadpool and Wolverine.

Apart from his contributions to popular film series, Kinberg has also worked on projects like Ridley Scott’s adaptation of “The Martian,” penned the romantic action-comedy “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and collaborated on the initial episode of the “Sherlock Holmes” series starring Robert Downey Jr. These are just a few examples of his impressive body of work. Regardless of your opinion on these specific films, it’s clear that Kinberg has the talent to tackle new material in the “Star Wars” universe.

Lucasfilm has canceled a ton of Star Wars projects over the years

At present, neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has issued any statements clarifying the definitiveness of the upcoming trilogy, which is causing some concern among fans regarding director Kinberg’s vision coming to life on the big screen.

Fans of “Star Wars” are well aware that the franchise has a long history of intriguing ideas that never made it to the big screen. For instance, did you know that George Lucas initially intended to create the prequel films in the early 1980s? Or have you heard about Colin Trevorrow’s “Episode IX: Duel of the Fates,” which was scrapped in 2017? Not to mention, a proposed Guillermo del Toro project titled “The Rise and Fall of Jabba the Hutt” was also abandoned around the same time. Thinking about how amazing those could have been is heartbreaking, isn’t it?

Now, don’t get us wrong! We’re not saying that we don’t want it to happen. We think we’re speaking for a lot of people when we say that we truly hope this not only kills at the box office but also satisfies old and new fans alike in a major way. Despite a long and troubled history of various disappointments — whether it be a poorly executed film or a weak TV series — “Star Wars” fans are some of the most loyal and optimistic people out there. No matter how something turns out in the end, they tend to show up to give it a chance first. Here’s hoping that Kinberg gets a real shot at pushing the beloved franchise into new and exciting territory. We’re certainly here for it. How about you?
